Hi all of you,
I'd like to show a website that's not special because of the way it looks, but because how it shows its content: you can see my own PC at home!
Some time ago I decided to digitize my complete CD collection. Parts of it were already ripped (see
http://sixties.johnvanhulst.com and
http://jbw.johnvanhulst.com). The goal is to be able to listen to my own music everywhere and always. It took me several months to do this using 320KB MP3 files (a total of 480 GB). Of course it was totally impossible to upload this gigantic amount of data to my webserver. It would have taken more than a month (I have only ADSL). So I downgraded all files to 128KB MP3, but this is still about 50 GB... So I tried to find out to publish my Windows 7 PC onto the Internet.
It isn't difficult to install a webserver on your home PC (serving music or files in your home network), but it is very complex to publish your home PC onto the internet, bypassing your router, bypassing your firewall (this is called port forwarding). I finally found a way to do this. So here it is: my personal file and music server...
You don't have access to my file server (of course not), but you can listen to my CD collection. And you can chat about it in the meantime, Have fun, John
