Pages Are Not Updating on Server

Pretty soon, I'm going to abandon all material belongings that involve circuits or chips and move into a cave to be a peaceful hermit for the rest of my life. Before I pack up my stone ax though, I need to finish this stupid website that I was stupid enough to volunteer to build (and spent my OWN money on the dang software for it).

I don't know what I've done wrong but existing pages are not updating when I load changes to the server. I've tried deleting the entire website and uploading it again - repeatedly. New pages that I made today did upload, but you can't get to them because the pages that contain the links to them will not update - no matter what - even if I beg and plead with them and pray to the Gods of all things Microsoft. The only thing I can think of is that I've screwed up the files on my computer . . . pages (html) exists somewhere on my computer and that's what is getting downloaded, but those are not the same files that VSD preview shows me (those are the ones I want).

The website is still alive and well (and looks one HECK of a lot better) on my computer, but what's on the web is crap. Is there a way that I could simply delete everything on my computer while I have VSD open so that I can save again and start fresh? I suspect that I will loose the calendar and all the buttons (dozens) that I've created, but I really don't know what else to try. I have to have this done by Friday.

I'm using Windows 7 and the latest VSD. The website (sorry, it looks like crap right now) is www.theparentingplacewc.org. I doubt looking at it will help much though.

I'd appreciate any suggestions. I'm going to cry soon.

Try going to the Publish Menu and select Re-Sync Website. This will re-upload everything from VSD to your server.

One thing though to make sure you do first is go to the Publish Menu > FTP Account Settings and edit your server info. Make sure the remote folder path is not empty. You must define a valid path here.

The Re-Sync option is not available. It is in gray.

I also cannot get info to transfer. My server says that FTP info I have put in is correct.

That means you have not selected a Publishing Destination yet. Probably the root cause of all your issues. Go to the Publish Menu and select Choose a Publishing Destination and select your server. After you do that, the Re-Sync option will become available.

As to the FTP information, that you will need to make sure if accurate by consulting with your hosting provider.

Thanks, Scott. My host swears that the settings are correct. I selected "website" as the publishing destination. It just will not transfer through VSD, and that has been the case all along. I shut down Norton and all that to do the upload. It still says that's not going through. I do not believe it is something on my side blocking it anyway because I CAN use the software to upload through Web Calendar, just not through VSD - so I have been doing it manually since day one. But, whatever.

If I can get everything on the server working correctly, I should just be able to delete everything on my computer and transfer it back from the server without all the garbage that is messing me up.

I am having a different problem now. On this page, that should be a "glow" around the logo in the upper left hand the corner. The larger picture further down on the right should be a photo of two children, but it is the logo again all stretched out. I tried deleting the photo and renaming it and putting it back, but that didn't work. Any idea what is going wrong on this page?:

I would suggest opening a support ticket and send us your FTP info. I have never heard of the remote folder being called "website" before, but anything is possible. Typically it is a / or /public_html or /htdocs

Once we have that info, we can tell you what you should put in there.

The "website" is the Publishing Destination and it appears to be the default. The remote folder is /web. Like I said, it works in Web Calendar, just not VSD. If I do the "internet connection test" in VSD it goes through just fine (or so it seems to me).

Under the “Test” window it says this:
Testing Server and Logon .. OK
Testing Folder Creation .. OK
Testing Uploads .. OK
Testing Downloads .. OK
Testing File Deletion .. OK
Testing Folder Destination .. OK

Under the “Log” Window it says this:
220 Welcome
331 Please specify password
230 Login successful
221 Features EPRT EPSV MDTM PASV TEST STREAM SIZE TVFS UTF8 221 End
257 “/”
250 Directory successfully changed
550 Failed to change directory.
257 “/web/vsd.tst” created
250 Directory successfully changed
200 Switching to Binary mode
550 Failed to change directory
250 Directory successfully changed
200 PORT command successful. Consider using PASV
150 Ok to send data
226 Transfer complete
200 Switching to Binary mode.

Do you still want me to open a support ticket?

Yes, if you cannot get it to work, then a support ticket is needed. Reference this forum post as well. Make sure to include:

Operating System
IE version
Are you logged in as an Administrator or Limited User
Firewall and Anti-Virus Programs installed
FTP account info so we can run some tests.

Thanks, Scott. Just in case you run into another idiot along the way here - I had my host site FTP open all the time while I was trying to upload. It would let me connect through VSD but shut down the connection after a short time, and I am guessing that was because I was already signed in to the host's FTP.

Sheesh.
