When my website loads, the items on the page load separately with a slight time delay. Ideally I want the entire page to load as one, rather than the jigsaw piece effect I seem to have at the moment. See www.jfoxon.co.uk, any advice much appreciated

Page objects load independently and when you have a lot going on, this will happen. Connection speed is an important factor. You can always use a page preloading script. There are plenty of free preloading scripts around if you want to Google page preloading script.
CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

But Julian - don't forget that getting it right for your connection speed won't guarantee that it is right for every other user's connection speed. This puzzle effect will happen for first time users, but then if they allow caching, next time they visit you (and make sure they have plenty of reasons to come back and visit again) the pages should load more quickly.

If this is not the case (no caching for instance), then you will probably have to accept that this is one of the idiosyncracies of internet surfing. After all, you have two different types of medium on your front page - the static images and the flash movie which are inevitably going to behave differently in their loading times anyway. Not only that, VSD uses images which you probably don't see as images (except when the "puzzle" pops up) which will have an effect - if only minimal - on page loading times.

Have you considered that maybe you could make a less complex front page and draw your users inside the site to then display more of your images? More than anything I am thinking about the flash object there. As little as possible on the front page, and then when you have your users' interest, they will be more prepared to hang around for the rest of the show.

Just a thought.

and ps. a great collection of images there!
