I think if you are using FireFox, you can install an add-on called Web developer. It gives you an extra tool bar with a feature 'Outline', where you can outline block level elements. That should reveal if you have anything on top of each other. There may be other ways too, but this web developer toolbar is quite a handy thing.

When you click on preview in VSD right click the preview window in your browser then click view source. Now look below the /* OBJECT STYLES */ and pay close attention to the z-index. The higher the number the higher in the stack the object is. Zero being the bottom layer.

I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.
