I knew it had to be something weird as you appeared to be doing everything correctly. I wonder if some of the other users in the forum that have had problems were doing the same thing. Have fun with your new discovery.

I'm having the same trouble. I have used the same linking system for a long time with fine results. Lately, when I link a file using the drop down link box, and selecting browse, then picking the file, it appears to link just fine. The browse box new stays grey, so I do not have the opportunity to go in and scroll to the end of the link file to see exactly what it has copied. (Seems to me this is different than in the past.) When the page is uploaded, the .pdf (in this case) file goes up fine. BUT, when the link is clicked on the website, the viewer is taken to file/download/ only (not to the actual document). There, they can see my entire download file index. They can pick any doc they want (or all of them!). Something has changed. Any help appreciated!

Several things here Tim...first, you really should rename all those PDFs without spaces. Some servers deal well, some do not. Best to just use a dash or underscore.

Second, the links you are talking about do not exist. When I hover over your link, this is all I get http://www.historicinteriors.com/files/Download No filename. I think another user had this problem and it was solved by adding the .pdf to his filename. In your case, if you are selecting the filename in browse, then it may be the spaces that are killing it. Try a file or two with no spaces in the name and see what you get.

And last, adding an .htaccess file would stop everyone from being able to access that directory.

I've been trying your suggestions. No good news.
First, All the files in the ...'files/download...' list were working fine at one time or another in the past, spaces and all. The .pdf is attached to all the file names I've tried linking to, and have linked to, in the past. So, something has changed. My server is Inmotionhosting. They may have changed, but I don't know they have.
Second, My website was stored and uploaded recently using a computer running XP. I had previously (and successfully) been doing the website with a Vista computer. The XP unit does not show the file link when I hover over the 'link' in a preview test. I have added a Windows 8.1 laptop to my collection. I've put VSD on it, and when I try the link file with the laptop, it does show that the link has picked up the file when I do a test hover over the link in preview. I have not actually used the 8.1 laptop to publish anything yet, so there is no chance that the web has been affected by the 8.1 unit. So, we're back to go. I think there is something in the VSD program itself that is 'technical term alert' - Wonky.
Any help appreciated. Should I remove VSD and download the program again???

VSD works fine. You mention your directory as files/download...be aware there is a difference between that and files/Download which is where your files actually are. Don't know if you tried to publish yet or not as I'm getting the same problems. No filename. Spaces or no spaces for some reason the file is not being added to VSD. Whether this is a win8 problem or not I have no idea since I don't have win8.

Quick question, are you running as 'administrator'?

Am I running as administrator? Well, theoretically I am. I've been thinking about that, too. As soon as I get to my office, I'm going to double check and make sure I am not logged in some other way. Hopefully! this will be the crux of the issue.
Excuse my files/download laziness. Yes, I had it right with files/Download.... The linked file is where it should be, the link itself is incomplete. So... cross your fingers and I'll see if maybe I got logged out as Administrator somehow and didn't know it. A couple of other folks around here sometimes use that machine....

Just to clarify on the "Run as Administrator" thing, that is not something to do with whether or not your computer is running on an admin login, it's whether the program is running on an admin setup. To do this do the following:

Close the program that you want to change to Run as Administrator if it is running.
Right click the shortcut to the program you want to change to Run as Administrator.
Choose Properties at the bottom of that menu.
Go to the Compatibility tab.
Now put a check mark in the box at the bottom for Run as Administrator.
Click ok and start the program.
