How to transfer VSD files to a 2nd...

I am real new to this posting stuff, so I am not sure this goes here, but...

There are many reasons why I am going to buy CC (good going), but I one big issue. I want to put the program on two computers, which I have already done. I copied the files using a flash drive (or whatever they are called today) and the sites look fine in VSD edit until...I go to preview. The sites are all messed up to the point literally everything is spread out all over the screen. I have not found a true solution in the posts, and quite frankly do not even know where to begin. Can someone outline a concise method for folder and file set-up that will work on the transfer situation. I really appreciate your help.

From my previous question. I just realized on the second computer I am using when I preview my site it i being opened in Microsoft Word, so no wonder it doesn't look right, but does anyone know how to change this so my default browser IE will be used?

Steve, go to Settings > Select Preview Browser.

About moving a VSD site to another computer...
Before putting anything on your flash drive, get organized. I keep all my website files in one folder (.vnu, Files, images or photos, graphics and documents). When you put your site on another computer, VSD needs to be able to find everything just where it was before. If you have things scattered around the first computer, you may miss an image or something else when you load up the flash drive. :)

Paintbrush -

Okay, so I might be a little dense. So, if I make a site named "xyz" everything goes into a folder labeled "xyz." But, if I make a second website called "abc" then all files used go into that folder called "abc." OR do all files for every website I make go into one folder. Sorry for needing the clarity in my mind! And, really a huge thanks for your help.

Thanks for the tip on the settings tab, I will give it a try!

This would be for each site you would want to have on more than one computer.

So, if you have xyz.com on computerA and want to put it on computerB, you'll need to copy all the files onto your flash drive. That's why it's best to have them all in one place to begin with; in a folder called "my xyz site" for example. If you have multiple sites, you would do the same for each.

Lets say on computerA you have xyz.com, abc.com and mnop.com and you've got each of them in their own folders along with all their files. Much easier than having all your images, graphics, whatever all mixed up! You would copy each folder to the flash drive, then load them onto computerB.

Or, you could have one master folder that holds all your other website folders; "My Websites" for example. Within My Websites you would have the folders for my xyz site, my abc site, etc. To transfer your sites to computerB, you would copy "My Websites" master folder to your flash drive.
I hope that makes sense :)

I need to do something similar; I want to move my site from one computer to a new laptop. I'm sorely afraid of what would happen when I do this. Previously on the first computer i had reorganize my word files and it totally screwed with my website. I thought everything on VSD/website hosting site pointed to docs stored on the hosting site not on my computer.

Similar to your suggestion, is it best to just buy an external hard drive and let everything live there so that the VSD site can find everything on the external drive no matter what computer I use?

For example, I would have 5 years of files I would have to re-link and i'm trying to figure out how to avoid going through the crying pain of doing this again.

Thanks!

If your not intending to use the OLD pc any more you could remove the hard drive and plug it into a USB docking station.

Then your laptop would use the whole thing intact, might have to change hardrive lettering but thats to technical for me to explain.

if I have understood all the millions of posts people have asked this question in (heaven knows I may not have hahaha), you can take the .vnu file and the folder that has the same name as your site in it (that you didn't create yourself and was created by VSD) and move those 2 items to your other computer. I believe everything you need for your site is in them. The .vnu file keeps the structure information for your entire site, and the folder has all the images, files, etc. that are needed for it.

I could be wrong here, but I don't "think" that VSD uses files outside of those 2 areas, I believe that VSD makes a copy of anything you have used outside of it's directory and puts it into it's directory so it has it all contained in an area between that .vnu file and the folder.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong here as I don't want to steer her wrong, this is just how I have understood the process. It's always been made to sound very easy to change from one machine to another with this process.

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
