I'm not even sure what to call this in order to search for it, so I'm opening a new thread (sorry if this has been discussed before).

Working in VSD I would like to set up my page so when a visitor clicks on text in a left hand column, it will open up a frame to the right of the column on this page - replacing a map illustration. This isn't a published site so I can't link it up but here is my inspiration page:

I'm new to web design and have tried various link targets but I'm not getting it. Since I convinced management to let me redesign their site over our existing web company, I really would like to give it my all! Any help would be soooo appreciated. Thanks!

Hi Kate,

I am sorry, but you cannot use frames in Visual Site Designer. What you want to do is definitely doable, but you would need to use our HTML Editor 2010SE to accomplish that task.

Thanks Scott. Do you foresee VSD upgrading to use frame in frames in the future? If not, can I simply copy the code from my current VSD designed website and copy it into the HTML Editor to complete the frame in frame functionality?

No, I don't see the software ever evolving to use frames. It really is a design form frowned upon by the developer community. You can take what you create in VSD and use it in the HTML Editor, but you can never go back to VSD once you make changes in the Editor.

Really? Wow, I kinda liked not leaving the host page to drill down :/ guess being a newbie I don't know all the pitfalls of using frames. Guess I need to pull out my HTML class books and start refreshing my brain to using it. Thanks again.

Frames is pretty outdated for a webdesign Kate, I can see why it wouldn't be added in. CSS layout is the way things are done these days, not sure if VSD utilizes CSS a lot yet, but I heard that it was supposed to at some point. Adding Frames setups to any program these days would be a downgrade rather than an upgrade :)

Kate Taylor... LOL... sounds as if your class books may be a little out of date and need changing so don't rely too much on what they tell you!

Using frames is a greater sin than using tables for presentation!

Yes, I said it. So what! :P

I ran into this same problem with internal links with vsd, if i want to do all the creating with vsd and then use editor to finish the final touch, how can i then load all the vsd as a built website into editor?

They are two separate applications which were never created to work together I'm afraid. It really is an "either/or" situation. The advantage of the VSD is that even those with no knowledge of html or coding can use it.
However, don't forget that there is the html box in VSD if you do want to add a little code for any reason.
