I have to confess that, a short time ago, I admitted defeat and published via Filezilla.
It was fairly straightforward, involving 2 uploads - one for /files folder and one for all the HTML files. I uploaded these to the /web folder and it has worked fine and i can at last see my site on the internet with the proper URL.
It is a bit unfortunate that /web still contains various remnants of the old Frontpage website that I can't delete but they don't seem to be causing any problems.
I would still have preferred to have been able to use VSD publish facility (and may yet have another go at it) but, for the moment, I am just happy to have my new site online
Thanks to all you people who have attempted to help. i am feeling a bit guilty about having taken the "easy" way out

You didn't follow instructions

Aren't you a little short for a Storm Trooper?
Hello Zac and Paintbrush,
I guess I do have to plead guilty to not following instructions properly and will have to live with the rather messy look of my /web folder until I can discover a method of removing the dross.
But at least the website is up and running and I have confidence in the publishing procedure even if it's not the one I really wanted to use
Thanks for your suggestions

Wallace, does your web host have cpanel or some such instrument that would allow you to do some house cleaning? That's possibly not allowed with an outside FTP.
Hello Rodgw,
I have just had the following response from my web host re an earlier query about deleting the remaining Frontpage data on /web:
"The Frontpage folders are ones that are system required, even if you are not using Frontpage, so they cannot be deleted. The only way you would be able to get rid of them would be to upgrade to our current hosting service which does not have Frontpage installed on the servers."
So it looks like it may not have been possible to get rid of the stuff even if i had followed Paintbrush's instructions.
I will find out what is involved in upgrading then consider whether it is worth the time and, presumably, cost to do it.
But thanks for your suggestion anyway
