Finally migrated from v.6 to v. 7.0...

After some big issues going from v.5 to v.6, I stuck with v. 6 until I finally upgraded my computer. New system is WAY faster, but v. 7.0 seems to do everything WAY slower; is that normal?

A couple of examples
1) When I click the "Save" icon, it used to take maybe 15 seconds to save my 28-page site. Now it takes several minutes
2) When I publish the site, it takes exactly as long to publish it as it does to re-sync it. First it says "Building site on your computer" and that process takes about 4 times as long as v. 6.0. Then when it up loads, it uploads EVERYTHING again; I see every file name and every image as it uploads. That was never the case before.

3) Finally, when I click on the "X" in the upper right to close the window, I get the normal
"Do you want to save" message. A yes answer used to take maybe 5 seconds until the window closes, now it is closer to 3 minutes.

These thing add up to some very tedious downtime if you make changes and publish, or even just save, your changes a couple of times a day. It's especially frustrating because every other program is substantially faster then my old XP computer, maybe VSD just does not like Win &7 ?

Any help would be appreciated.

To fix this, right-click your Visual Site Designer shortcut icon and select Run as Administrator. This should properly launch Visual Site Designer for you. If it does, great! You can continue to launch the program in this way, or you can go a step further and configure the shortcut to always run as administrator. Here's how:

1. Right-click the shortcut icon, and click Properties.
2. Click the Compatibility tab.
3. Here, put a check mark by Run This Program as an Administrator.
4. Next, put a check mark next to Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For: and ensure Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 is selected.
5. Click OK.

If you continue having problems you may also need to set the application as an exception to Windows Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature. Normally if this is the culprit, you'll get a little bubble along the taskbar notifying you, which will allow you to set the offender as an exception.

One last option that could be the cause of this, and related to the DEP feature, is User Account Controls. This is the large window that appears in Vista asking you to "Allow" or "Deny" access to functions within programs. You can turn this off within your Control Panel > User Accounts window, along the left-hand pane.

All three options let you control your system exactly how you want and give you full access to do/run anything on the computer.

Hmmmmmmm. Sounds a lot like a message I posted on this forum a couple of months ago. That post is located at the following link:

Bill, I think its very interesting that your web site and save times are virtually identical to mine!

Since my last post to that thread, I tried several things to solve VSD 7's SLOW save problem. Running CCleaner didn't help, rebooting my system and running only VSD didn't help, and restoring a Ghost backup of my system from 2009 (a few months after I bought my PC) didn't help either. I even went back to VSD 5.9.4 and VSD 6.06 to confirm the speed at which those two versions saved my web site and found out that 5.9.4 only took 15 seconds to save my site, and 6.06 took 33 seconds. But no matter what I tried, VSD 7 has consistently taken anywhere from 2 minutes 50 seconds to 3 minutes and 10 seconds. I also noticed that most of the pages in my 34 page web site took about 5 seconds each to save while 9 of those pages took about 9 seconds each to save. (These 9 pages contain consecutive portions of one article that I broke up into 9 sections.) So, I dumped VSD 7 for now and went back to 6.06 so that I wouldn't lose so much time waiting for save operations to complete.

However, in the next couple of weeks, I plan to go back to VSD 7 because it contains a fix to a mouseover bug that exists in 6.06. I will have to re-upgrade so that I can modify one of my menu buttons just before I (FINALLY) publish my web site (yaaaay!). Unless a fix to this problem is found by then, I'll probably open a trouble ticket and submit a copy of my entire web site to CC support. Just thought I'd give you a "heads up," Scott. :)

Tom

PS: By the way, I am running XP, not 7 or Vista.

Scott, the "right click and Run as an Administrator" did not work. Still took 2 1/2 minutes to "Build Data" and save the site to the computer, then another 3 minutes to upload just the one change to my home page (straightened out a couple objects).

I will try the other fix and see if that workd

Tom, thanks for the input, I hope there is a fix for it.

BTW Scott, my Win 7 computer only has one user, Admin.
I save my work a lot, as I became a bit paranoid about the "VSD has encountered an error and needs to close" warning that used to occur with ver 6.0 Nothing worse than doing an hour's work and then getting that error when you try to upload the changes.

I would check your DEP settings and add VSD to the exemption list. After you add it, you need to reboot. You can find instructions here at http://www.itechtalk.com/thread3591.html

Ouch, you cannot believe how painful this is.

A simple update to the site that should take 15 minutes takes an hour, most of it just waiting.

I have tried all the above recommendations, and none of them have worked. Is it possible to revert back to 6.0 or will I lose everything I've changed since I updated?

My computer is brand new, and has been "cleaned", I have very few programs on it, 8GB ram, quad processor, way faster hard drives, and only VSD 7.0 is slow.

I am especially concerned about making a change with the "Publish" button. I can watch as the program goes slowly through every single jpg in my site, just like it used to do with the "Re-Sync" command. But now even a single-image resize results in a full website re-sync. Frustrating indeed.

One other interesting observation, I had a GIF of an eagle in flight on my site that worked great with 6.0
With 7.0, I got a black box around the eagle, an area that should have been transparent.

OK, so I got rid of the old GIF, re-installed it, tested it with "Preview", and it looked good.
But by the time I got it uploaded, in Firefox it does not show at all, and in I.E. 8.0 it shows as a blank box with a red "X" in it. Figure that one out...

What size are your images before re-sizing in VSD? If they're re-sized within the program, VSD has the original image to upload as well as the re-sized version. It's a good thing to edit images in something like Photoshop and save/optimize them for the web (to keep the file sizes as small as possible).
Not sure what to tell you about the gif image, but when I went from VSD 6 to 7, there were a few files that had to be re-inserted (Edit > Add Files) before they showed in the published site.

If you've already tried that, the next step might be putting in a support ticket so someone can have a look at your site files. :)

If you find uploading over FTP a bit cumbersome, you should check out our FREE S-Drive service that is fully integrated into Visual Site Designer. With just a few steps, you can publish to our service and be amazed at how much faster it is.

1. First, you need to create your S-Drive Account

2. Go to Publish > CoffeeCup Account Settings and enter in your CoffeeCup account information

3. Go to Publish > Choose a Publishing Destination and select your S-Drive account

4. Click Publish

If you like what you see, you can even point your very own domain name over to your S-Drive account as well.

I would also be interested to know how large your files are as well as paintbrush asked. Uploading over FTP is a bit slower with VSD simply because it has to check each file associated with your website and compare it with the file on the server to determine which file needs to be updated. The more files you have, the longer this process can take.

Enjoy!
