Can't upload to server

I have already contacted support and was unable to get a working solution. Thought maybe someone in the forums might be able to assist.

I have been using VSD for a long time. I use the built in publish tool to upload to my server. I have now encountered a problem. My site is no longer uploading correctly and I receive an error message.

The index page is ok but the others are all f*ked up each in their own unique way. Each page should be similar to the index page in style, instead one the background image is a giant picture, on others the background color is green, not white, the navigation buttons are missing text or on some pages non functional. My one new photo that I added is not showing up instead an existing photo has been duplicated.

When I try to re-synch my site I receive the error message:

'An error occurred while trying to upload to your server'

What I've tried:

I have triple checked my firewall settings and VSD is allowed to connect.

I have tried DISABLING BOTH firewall and ANTI VIRUS when uploading - this has not made any difference i still have the same issues

I have tried clearing my browser cache and still have the same issues

I have run the TEST connection option from within the server settings window. It always comes back as 'OK'

I have tried looking at my site in 'PREVIEW' mode using both the default browser and IE and Firefox (the ones I use most often) and the preview always looks ok - nothing out of place.

I have made certain the passive mode box is checked from within the server setting window

I have triple checked my user name, password and directory file. All of those settings are correct.

I have tried deleting ALL files off the host directory and then re-synching. I still have the same issue.

CC Support could only suggest disabling the firewall/antivirus - which I have done and still have the same results. CC Support also suggests using S-Drive instead of the built in publishing tool. I am not sure how that solves this issue.

Anyone else ever have this issue?

my site: http://www.kellyajennings.com

I am operating on a Windows 7 64 bit platform (Home Premium) with i5 Core
I use ESET Smart Security 4 for firewall / anti virus
I host my site at 1 and 1
I run VSD ver 7 build 24 (I run the program as administrator)

I have been using VSD for several years and use the built in FTP tool to upload to my server. This is the first time I have encountered this specific issue.

Kelly,
Who are using to host your site? If it is GoDaddy I had the same trouble a couple of months ago.

My webost is 1and1

Did you figure out how to resolve the issue?

The only thing I haven't tried yet is to uninstall VSD and reinstall - ??

The problem I had was GD changed the security on the server I was on. That is what they told me anyways. They upgraded me to another type of server. Probably unrelated to you situation.

Ok now I have also tried uninstalling and reinstalling VSD and then tried re-synching my site (still with firewall and anti virus Disabled)

the result is it is even more messed up than before.

My index (home page) had been the only thing uploading correctly but after reinstalling VSD even the home page is messed up.

Try saving the site on your pc to a different folder and or different name then try publishing again.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Hi Eric-

Tried saving as different name and into a new folder

Same problems and while I never thought this possible my site is even more messed up than before

Sheesh.... I don;t want to have to redesign a new site from scratch - even worse I'm afraid I'll put in the hours only to have the same experience.

I've been at this for over 8 hours today [insert strong expletive here]...

I'm packing in for the evening and I'll check back tomorrow for any additional suggestions

{weep} :-(

How about deleting everything on your server and going for a totally new upload?

Kelly, Do as Janys has suggested and use an ftp program or your cpanel to delete your server clean. If this doesn't solve the problem open a support ticket.

Kelly - have you done a lot of copying/pasting? I'm seeing a lot of 'generic' image files (IMG_1.jpg, IMG_2.jpg...). It looks like more than one version of the site has been uploaded and now all those files are jumbled together.
I'd start with Janys' suggestion and get everything off the server. Next, go over your site and look for images hiding behind other things, make sure all unnecessary images/shapes are deleted. Go to your Files folder (the one created by VSD) and get rid of the IMG_2.jpg files. Then, starting with the home page (index), get that set up the way you want with everything that will be on all pages (backgrounds, logo, menu, copyright...). For your other pages, don't copy/paste anything - instead, go to Settings > Standard Settings for New Pages > Load Existing Page Settings and choose Index. On each page, insert only original image files. For example; if you insert 'my_photo.jpg' on the home page and need a smaller version on a different page, create that smaller version in an image editing program, name it something like 'my_photo2.jpg' and insert that on the other page.
Last, if wanted, add any effects to your images/graphics (drop-shadows...). This will create some of those IMG files, since VSD will save a version of the image with the effect applied to it. They'll be OK if they don't get copy/pasted.

You want your site as "clean" as possible before up-loading. Don't leave unused files hanging out in the Files folder, and make sure there's nothing hiding on your pages that shouldn't be there.
That's all I've got! Maybe someone else can think of something different to try, but if it gets to muddled, I find it easier to start over with a clean slate rather than making myself crazy trying to 'untangle' everything :D
