I added a 'Share This' button from the website addthis.com website. I added the html code with the html tool but the button doesn't show up unless I go to preview and there it shows just fine. Is this the way it works--- where it just shows a white box with grayed lines and the name of the html.?

I get a message when I try to say the page that says to add files thru settings..........

I really don't understand what is supposed to be added and is my "Share" button the cause of getting this message? If so what do I need to add?
thanks!

Anything you add with the HTML or Flash tool will not show within the actual VSD program. You'll just see that html box. In preview or once it's uploaded, you'll see it just fine. When adding photo albums, forms or any other html/flash items, I preview frequently to make sure they're positioned where I want them and working.
In VSD, if you click on that html box, and open the objects palette, you'll see a button for "edit HTML". You can see your added code there. As long as you've got your code snippet there and the html box is showing - you should be set. :)

Hey Paintbrush! thanks so much for the explanation!! I have just had problems trying to understand what is flash and what isn't so didn't know if I had to add files or not.

The 'share this' button when clicked pops up a box of sites that you can click on to share the webpage with. --- so I thought maybe that was flash?

Thanks for your help,
Kare

One other thing - I like to make sure the html box is the same size as the code snippet, so there's no unwanted surprises design-wise:

So just position that box where you want the item to show, preview it to see if it needs to be moved a bit to get it right where you want it, then continue with the rest of your design.

(Seems we posted at about the same time, so I missed yours while adding mine)
If in doubt, use the Flash tool to make sure it can read all the files you add. Also, if you use the HTML tool for something and it doesn't work, that's a good indication you need to use the FLASH tool :D
Have fun with it - now you know how easy it is, you'll find all kinds of things you really don't need to have on your site - try not to go overboard!

<!-- AddThis Button END -->

Above is the snippet of code that I inserted and the object box says 'height 83" and width 21"

Not exactly the same but I presume this is okay.

Thanks for all your help!

HI all,
I find if you make a small box with the html tool the code added always sizes itself. just an fyi thing....:)

Bruzer,

The size of extra bits of code will resize to fit the content, but Paintbrush, and I, like to keep the HTML box the same size as the rendered block of code, that way you can adjust the layout to match. It's also easier to lose boxes of code when they're very small like that behind other elements on the page and then items start to overlap when the page gets rendered in the browser.

Cesar, what I was hoping to express was if you make an html box say 10x10 and the button code calls for 83x21 then the html box will resize itself to that size as long as the box is smaller then the actual size... sorry for the confusion. lol:)

I know the box will size itself if it's smaller than the code - but will it do that if you drag out a box that's larger than the code being inserted? I don't remember.
Sometimes I've changed the size of a previously added item (like a form, gallery or Iframe), then copied/pasted the changed code using the edit html button, so needed to change the sizes in the object properties to adjust the size of the already placed html box. One could just delete the existing box and drag out a new one, but If I have it positioned just right and only need to add (or take off) a few pixels, that's when I would rather use the object properties box to change the size.

So Kare, you can type the actual dimensions of your code snippet in there so your html box will be the same size and dimensions as your button.

Hope that little ramble made sense :P
