I'm helping some refugees getting settled here, and among other things I've been asked to teach them some computer skills. Last week I set up a computer for them with XP Home, and today I heard they can't open it.
What had happened was, that the welcome screen opened as far as to the user icons that each user click on to log in. The thing is, I had specified just one user, and no passwords, and now the screen is showing me the text 'Click on your user name to get started' (free translation from Norwegian, don't know the exact wording in Engllish) but NO USER ICONS whatsoever :o I can't find any way to bypass this and get into the machine other than reformat and set it up again.

Anyone here with some hints for me on how I can solve the problem without having to reformat and all that?

Secondly I would also be quite keen to find out what they may have clicked on to cause this, so that I can tell them what they have to stay away from.

Well, the 'red alert' is down, I have been able to fix the problem by starting the machine in safe mode.

Inger,

Do not know the answer ot your problem. Probably use to, but have forgotten a lot of that kinds of stuff. Here are a couple of sites you can always check for PC problems. Just do a Search on the site.

http://www.zdnet.com/ (great all around site, filled with tons of downloads, shareware, articles, etc)

techrepublic.com (another great site and offers a paid version, not worth it unless your a tech head)

http://www.pcmag.com/

http://www.pcworld.com/

(Because these last two sites want to be friend, actually, they want your money, they offer tons of freebies and articles. I am sure you could find something on their sites, quickly.)

Good Luck,

You can always go to a retore point to a time before this happened. You can even access this from the command prompt in XP.
