Prevent the editor opening with...

Hi team.

I'm sure this didn't happen when I first installed the editor, which means it is likely I have ticked something that should be unticked, but no matter what I tweak in the options I cannot stop the editor loading the two 'what is a website' pages on startup. This is very annoying and there must be a way to stop it, I just can't find it.

The last open project will always automatically open. There is no option in the software to prevent that as this was by design. If your initial tab is "My Computer", you should not even seen the last open project unless you click on the "My Websites" tab.

Possibly in a future version we could add a preference for this ability.

So in essence I have to create an empty project just so multiple pages don't open with the editor all the time? I'm no coder but this is not a good look. How could anyone think this would be a good thing to do without having an option to turn it off? Imagine Windows opening two help screens every time it booted, people would soon get tired of that.

When I start the editor and my default project opens, no files are actually opened, just the project is. If I wish to actually open a file in a project, I have to do that.

The project you are seeing, is the default "What's a Website Project". You probably opened this once during the pre-release which is why it is set to automatically open each time the editor launches. A default install would not see this issue as it was corrected in the official release. If you simply create a new project with nothing in it, this will correct the problem.

What you may want to do is completely reset the editor to remove all the previous beta settings:

1) Uninstall the editor
2) Go to c:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\CoffeeCup Software\CoffeeCup HTML Editor\Settings and remove all files from here
3) Reboot
4) Re-install the software

For us XP users I think it is:

c:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\CoffeeCup Software\CoffeeCup HTML Editor\Settings

No problem, some of us, and I am thankful, will have the ability to leapfrog from XP over Vista into W7. It is interesting that just about every computer shop in town offers installation from Vista to XP labor free.

Hi David

Well my computer shop doesn't, unless of course we are supplying the machine with said Vista install and the client really wants old technology. Vista gets a lot of bad press but I really don't know why. Admittedly, out of the box it is a bit of an ugly dog with some awful implementations (UAC etc) but with a few simple tweaks and mouse clicks it is soon retrograded back to a more XP-ish rendition. My particular Vista installation is now over two years old and that is a record for me; when running XP I formatted and reinstalled at least three times a year - this one I just keep tidy and the regsitry files are still within 10% size-wise of a clean install and things are (touching wood here) running swimmingly. I have just installed another terabyte of hard drive space as my 500 gig 'D' drive was filling up, but that is all I have done hardware-wise in 2 years. I have built many new machines for clients and honestly, none run as well as this 'old' clunker which is why the money allocated for a yearly upgrade is still sitting in the bank.

I have, of course, all the Windows 7 releases and run that OS on a work 'tester' machine but have no urge to install and run it myself yet - I think I will wait for the actual release rather than have to uninstall a beta version when the time comes.

I admit our 8 work computers all run XP, this is mainly for compatibility with the software we use than for anything else. I wouldn't go back to XP for the simple reason I don't have to; I am very happy with Vista and while I think some of the slamming of the OS is warranted, the rest is because (as usual) it is 'the done thing' to slam Microsoft products and one doesn't want to be seen as the outsider.

What is funny is I have had the completely opposite results with Vista. I have found the latest beta of Windows 7 to be more stable then any version of Vista I have ever had installed. I really don't want to tweak Vista or Windows 7 to look like XP. If I wanted that, I may as well just use XP. ;)

I personally don't think people bash Vista because of Microsoft. I think more because it is a POS at times ;) Windows XP always seems works the same on all computers. Windows Vista is vastly different on each computer it is installed on. Heck, look at the visual editor problems you are having. I have at least 15 computers at my disposal and not once can we get that to replicate in house. You would think the odds would be that at least 1 system would get it.

Well, I searched google for this:

coffeecup editor a recent security update from Microsoft has been detected

and there are a few results. It turns out this issue is hardly unknown, and there is even a forum post with you responding to someone with the same error. It has been known then for at least a year so pointing to a problem with my machine is a little off.

There is even a fix posted for it as well so I am surprised the developers haven't at least heard of this and looked into the what or why, instead preferring to apparently just ignore it because hardly anyone complains.
