2008 HTML Editor -- Vista Not...

I no longer can access the visual portion of the 2008 Editor. When I open it, I get this:

"A recent Microsoft security update for the DHTML Editing Component has been detected.

This update (KB 891781) causes the Visual Editing portion of the Coffee to run improperly.

Therefore the Visual Tab will be disabled."

Any clues on when I can expect a fix?

Try this. Right-click the HTML Editor 2007/2008 shortcut icon, and select Run as Administrator. This should properly launch the HTML Editor for you. If it does, then great! You can continue to launch the program in this way, or you can go a step further and configure the shortcut to always run as administrator. Here's how:

1. Right-click the shortcut icon and click Properties.
2. Click the Compatibility tab.
3. Put a check mark by Run This Program as an Administrator.
4. Put a check mark by Run This Program in Compatibility Mode For: and ensure Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2 is selected.
5. Click OK.

If you continue having problems you may also need to set the application as an exception to Vista's Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature. Normally if this is the culprit, you'll get a little bubble along the taskbar notifying you, which will allow you to set the offender as an exception.

One last option that could be the cause of this, and related to the DEP feature, is User Account Controls. This is the large window that appears in Vista asking you to "Allow" or "Deny" access to functions within programs. You can turn this off within your Control Panel > User Accounts window, along the left-hand pane.

All three options let you control your system exactly how you want and give you full access to do/run anything on the computer.

To begin with, I did right-click the HTML Editor 2007/2008 shortcut icon, and selected Run as Administrator, but the error persisted. I then followed your instructions (except I had to select XP Service Pack 2 and not "Windows XP Pro Service Pack 2" because I do not have "Pro." I also followed the instructions to set an exception for coffee.exe to Vista's Data Execution Prevention (DEP) feature. That did nothing as well. Finally, I turned off the User Account Controls. Nothing worked to get rid of the Vista message and the Visual Tab is still disabled. Strange thing is it used to work until MS updated Vista.

I have vista, and have no trouble at all since the update that seems to have caused a problem for you. I can't reproduce your error. Have you tried downloading the latest version of html editor from the coffeecup website? Maybe the version you have is outdated, or maybe even your antivirus caused a problem?
I think trying an instal with the antivirus turned off, might help (I could be wrong). I would make sure to back up all your web pages and files first, just as an extra precaution, then uninstal the CC html editor, shut off antivirus, re-boot, then make sure antivirus is off, install html editor, reboot...make sure antivirus gets turned back on, and see if everything is working properly..
I know, it's a pain to take all the steps, but it might work...maybe.

I did as you said. As soon as the editor installed, the Vista error reappeared. Are you sure you have MS update KB 891781 installed on your pc? I'm awfully tempted on hunting it down and deleting it.

I had a look in my Micro$oft update history, and ALL of my updates start with KB 9, not 8. Are you sure you got this update from them? If so, do a search for the update number on their website and see if something newer is out there. If it does exist, you should be able to uninstal it. If you find out you really need it, just launch Windowns Update again and it will ask you to download it if you do need it.
I am curious to find out if removing it helps.
Also check that you have the latest version of the program from CoffeeCup, and turn off your antivirus when you download and install it (then reboot and make sure antivirus is on) before you use the program.

Maybe this page will help with some info on the problem:

I could not find it in the "Uninstall Updates" section of the control panel. Oh well. I'll let it rest. Won't use the Visual editor part anyway. Thanks for trying.

Dennis,

Try looking at the control panel, add/remove programs. My updates are listed there.

I found a bunch of updates but none matched the KB number I am getting whenever I start Coffeecup. I'm using the paid version of the anti-virus program AVG.
