What do the icons in the left margin represent. I have gone through the help manual and can not seem to find any reference to them. Tried to see a pattern with them but still don't understand what they represent. It appears to have 4 lines then a u shape line with and arrow at the end.

Sounds like you're describing the "Word Wrap" icon, as shown in the image below:

It means that the editor is wrapping long lines so that you don't have to scroll right in order to read an entire line of text that's longer than your screen width.

Yea, that is the word wrap function.
