First timer - lots of questions

I have been a programmer since punch cards were made of dinosaur skins but I always leaned on others for web work - no more. I need to put together a website, with really 2 pages. The front page, would say ' How are you - please enter your ID number '

Part of that ID number would be checked, against a set number (i.e. all of the numbers have the same 8 numbers in the ID - mickey mouse yes, but thats what it is), if the number passes - then a second screen is displayed - that has down load info on it ( i already have that one ) .

Any help for me - thanks.

Have you checked out Website Access Manager, to see if that would be a tool you could use?

;) The correct spelling is (in Norwegian) 'Hei på deg', pronounced more or less like 'hay paw day' :D

I hope you find a way to use WAM for your site. :)

Don, if your web host supports it, you can just put the files you don't want public in a password protected directory using htaccess-based security and that would allow people to enter those areas if their user name is on a list. My host, for example, has a feature where you can password protect individual directories and if that is set, users have to provide the password or they won't get in. All this is done with almost zero coding on my part, the access is controlled by server-side scripting.

Dave, what I need to do is to ask the user to enter an ID code, and then depending on what they enter, the second screen is displayed.

Ah, noted, something different from what I suggested but still doable with a little coding knowledge. In this case it is probably better to use something like the software suggested to do the job.

I think he means the Website Access Manager program that Inger suggested.
