Error on Install of Visual Site Designer

At the end of the install, it says that the unstaller did not completely install and gave me an installation error that included the words "dead child." When I open the program and click on "Create New" a "Tip of the Day" box pops up. The text for the box bleeds beyond the box. There is no way to close that box (none of the options: "OK," "Next" etc. work). I have to use Windows Task Manager to close the program. I uninstalled without problems, downloaded the program again - and the same thing happens.

Any thoughts?

The reason this maybe be happening is that you are using Large Custom DPI settings. You will need to change this to Normal DPI for the program to work. Here's how:

For Windows XP
Go to your Desktop, right-click it, and select Properties. Next, click the Settings tab and press the Advanced button. You will now see a DPI setting. If it is set to Large/120 DPI, set it to Normal/96. If you'd like to see this process in action, check out this video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AlhFUMcA … mp;index=0

For Windows Vista
Go to your Desktop, right-click it, and select Personalize. Select Adjust Font Size (DPI), located in the upper left-hand corner of the window. This will display the DPI setting. If it is set to Large/120 DPI, set it to Normal/96 DPI. If you'd like to see this process in action, check out this video tutorial: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqKk-nsa … mp;index=1

For Windows 7
Go to your Desktop, right-click it, and select Personalize. Select Display, located in the lower left-hand corner of the window. Then select Set Custom Text Size (DPI). This displays the DPI setting. If it is set to Large/120 DPI (125%), set it to Normal/96 DPI (100%).

Additionally, some Windows 7 themes change the default fonts to a nonstandard one, causing the issue described here. Change your theme back to the standard Windows 7 theme and see if that helps.

Scott, thanks so much. It worked. I spent the first couple hours almost overwhelmed and thinking that I was in waaaaay over my head with trying to build a website. Not so. No template is a good fit for the organization I work for, and I just had to get used to a different way of doing things. This program rocks! I am so pleased, and my boss will be too.

Thanks for your help.

I am experiencing a similar problem with the install and screen issues. However, I checked and my DPI is set as you stated, is there something else I should look at. Additionally, the desktop icon appears during installation but then disappears when the error message displays stating the uninstaller was not installed correctly.

Hiya Jeff,

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling? If not do this and see if it helps:

Uninstall

Run CCleaner which you can get at http://www.piriform.com which will clean out any residual files that might get left over at all as well as cleaning up a few other things such as temp files, cookies (you can set it to keep certain ones if you don't want to lose them etc., it's pretty versatile) and things like that, I run it constantly to keep my pc free of rogue tracking cookies and such.

Reboot your machine, and then reinstall.

If you already tried that, then nevermind and hopefully someone else can help you, good luck :)

Not sure what has happened - but try uninstalling and reinstalling the application to see if that helps. A file might have become corrupt for some reason and the reinstall might put that right.

Fixed. It's installing - I ran as administrator - even though I am administrator in the first place.
