I've had windows 7 for just a month and one thing that I can't find out is how to get the blimmin' Show desktop button fastened to the task bar. I've got it as far as onto the desktop, but that kind of defeats the object...

Help appreciated.

Hiya Inger,

I'm not sure if it's anything like Windows XP, but in case it is and in case you didn't know how it was done to start with:

Do you have the Quick Launch bar enabled on your taskbar? If not then enable it, that would be normally where you'd put that button.

If this isn't what you're after, or if windows 7 is different then I'm unable to help there, but if no answer by tomorrow I'll help ya search the web for an answer, there must be one out there somewhere. :)

It's not like WinXP... And the whole taskbar seems to be quick launch. I can fasten everything else, just not the Show desktop. :(

Is it the button in the right-lower corner of the screen you are looking for?

I've just found a nice overview of all the special features in Windows 7 in your language:

The Show desktop button is at the far right of the the Windows Taskbar now, it was removed from the original 'Quick Launch' bar.

If you are using 'Aero' you can .shake your application windows with or without your mouse and all your open windows will minimize to the task bar.

Inger, on my Windows 7 -- I click on the FAR right button (looks like a graded black button) and the desktop shows. Or right click and you will see two options.

Inger, on the task bar -- look at the graded black button on the FAR right. That button is always there.
Left click to show your task bar or right click for two options.

If you like using shortcuts, you can press the Windows key + D.

There's a few workarounds to recreating a Show Desktop icon like before. Here's one method:

You can then have it by the Start menu where most of us like it. ;)

This 2nd option is easier, but I don't prefer it as clicking a 2nd time on the icon doesn't bring the windows back into view. Although, if you never did that before, this won't bother you. :P

Lastly, you can also rig to add your old Quick Launch menu back if you miss it:

Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
