What's the future of MySql and...

I say let them develop a Mysql Oracle version, but leave the native MySql opensource. Would it potentially increase the increase server cost? I mean Wordpress is free, but with MySql it's like $50? Software has optional MySql if you can afford it? And OpenOffice has had huge value to me personally over the years. What will happen to it? What's not cool is no info on plans from Oracle on either one and think that in itself is a disservice to the developers that truly brought the value to the table to start with.

If I missed something here, pleeeease chime in.

Anyways, there's a group out there fighting to leave MySql opensource. Here are their sites:

They have a petition that maybe will send Oracle a message that to lose MySql as opensource will damage the community of developers.

I didn't even know Oracle was buying them! If Oracle developed their own version of mysql no one would use it because its easier to stick with what is standard... it's like with openoffice, how many people that use that software actually save documents using the openoffice file formatt? Since majority of folks still have MICROSOFT Word, I hafta save stuff in Word formatt or else no one else can open it. But I do use and LOVE openoffice lol!

What would work is if Oracle developed their own version of mysql that had significantly enhanced features over open source version; give people a reason to upgrade. They need a breakthrough, though. They need to add functionality that databases have never had before. They hafta to be real smart about it lol.

Ah man, I hope they don't mess with MySql. Too much open source software depends on it. I don't think Oracle will kill it off or deny non-licensed users, though.

Interesting news - I hadn't heard about this either. I hope they leave the basic versions free.
