MSIE 9 to Support HTML5 Elements, Vector Graphics and CSS Standards

Noticed this article in an e-mail web development daily

Microsoft is predicted to discuss the upcoming features of MSIE 9 at its upcoming MIX 2010 developer conference in Las Vegas. Speculators expect them to announce support for HTML5 elements, vector graphics and CSS standards.
Microsoft MSIE 8 was able to bring the browser to the standards of others with support for CSS 2.1 and several HTML elements, but the progress seemed to stop there. At the company's most recent developer event, PDC09, Steven Sinofsky, president of its Windows division, stated that MSIE 9 would provide a "more modern" browser experience, with a focus on the coming performance enhancements, JavaScript rendering and support for existing web standards, HTML 5 and CSS 3.

With companies such as Google grumbling about the use of MSIE, referring to it as a "non-modern" browser in regards to web standards, and releasing a Chrome Frame plug-in which enables MSIE7 and 8 browsers to run advanced web apps, its time for Microsoft to get up to speed.

We all know that Internet Explorer is a laggard in terms of compatibility, standards, and speed so far. But it seems they are finally getting serious now as Firefox and Chrome gradually chip off their share. I have been predominantly using Firefox for the last 2 years. They claim that IE 9 will perform better for CSS, DHTML and Javascript.

I personally will be curious about Silverlight 4, which will be part of their IE9 release (I believe). So far, both Flash and Silverlight have been used for graphical/video representations only, it will be interesting how well these technologies will be adapted to more meaningful web forms (data entry forms, banking?, etc.. )

Bottomline, Microsoft has been always doing good marketing before every release and it always falls short of expectations and security patches quickly follow after the release. Let's see if they do any different this time.

I heard they died recently. :)

But will IE 9 finally introduce support for xhtml, or should xhtml have a funeral too since nobody can use it?

XHTML is 'officially' dead, although parts will live on in HTML 5.0

Yes Tom, you can do the 'loving' on my behalf too, it'll save me the trouble of doing it myself.

It will be good to see IE move into line, because I like the way it renders text.

Yeah, I know. Microsoft sucks. I am a funny guy. Millions of business owners buy and remain loyal to MS only for tax purposes and want to cut their profit margin too.

Dream on Linux, mac, and freeware application users...Not in your lifetime. :)
