Ok people, I'm back again asking for help!

I'm in a bit of a panic! Today I got 2 error msg window thingies. The first one:

So I just clicked "OK". Then about a min later I got this one:

and I clicked "Send Report"


AND THEN my Norton Internet Security thing closed. It's always on & I'm able to see the little icon in the lower right of the taskbar.

Does anyone have any idea what this is all about? I've rebooted twice & I still got those error msg windows.

And yes, I'm currently looking for a new pc:) I'm seriously considering this:

If anyone cares to take a look & let me know if it's a good deal:) My Dad gets a discount thru his work, not sure how much though. We don't do anything too serious on the computer. Internet, some photo editing, movie making/burning, some games - but not any super "hardcore" games, ya know, just like Luxor:)

The following are my own opinions so take that for it's own worth

ccsvchst.exe is part of the semantic program, and this error could be caused by many things from a bad sector on your hard drive to a neutrino from space hitting your hard drive platter exactly at the moment and spot it is being written to, try doing a check disk, it should fix it up.

I'm not a big fan of symantic products, I find they take over your system too much for what you get in protection, I use free AVG (FREE) and some common sense and am fine.

As for computers the link you gave has expired probably because you were customizing the package but anyway I have had Dell, Acer, and HP computers and while a few years ago ( more than 5) HP and Acer were sketchy I find all three brands are quite good these days. Some things to keep in mind to help are

Windows 7 "compatible" is less then "compliant" a compatible computer may need some components to be upgraded to fully take advantage of W7, now I haven't seen these terms yet, they were used allot with Vista but there was a consumer backlash, so maybe Windows will not do the compatible/compliant thing this time around.

In general a 32 bit operating system (vista or 7) on a dual core computer will do you well particularly with the photo editing and movie making stuff. so try to get a 32 bit operating system and CPU.

Hardware tends to fall into 3 categories, consumer grade, commercial grade, and military grade. for most uses consumer grade is fine, most everything I have had is consumer grade. Commercial grade is good for beefed up for a rougher more intense life like in the business world, and unless you plan on checking your e-mail while screaming across the alkali flats in a monkey driven rocket car, Military grade is not needed.

The debate is now open

Make sure its dual core, at least 3 gig of RAM for what you're doing, and no less than 2mb of L2 cache if you want it not to get weighed down by processing large amounts of data. Also, be sure it has dedicated graphics memory, rather than shared.

I've had very bad experiences with HP, I would never buy one. I use Acer and Toshiba for my laptops. Been hearing really good things about a company called Asus that makes computers, but I have no personal experience with them.

By the way when you run CC are you using the registry cleaning feature, or just running the default scan? Cleaning your registry can help prevent errors like the one you're getting.

I uninstalled and reinstalled Norton Internet Security and so far so good.

It says it comes w/a free upgrade to Windows 7 which I totally don't want. I really don't want Vista either, but there is no option to "downgrade" to XP which I love!

Thanks for the input:) I've always had good luck w/HP's. I don't like Dell's - just the name bugs me:)

As for CC, all I do is open the program and click "Run Cleaner". The screen looks like the pic below right before I click "Run Cleaner". Should I click the "Registry" tab on the left and do something w/that?

If you have a windows XP installation disk there should be no reason why you can't install XP on the new system using you license key. You can't run it on your old and new computer, but one at a time.

Looks like you are headed in the 64bit CPU and OS direction, it really is your decision but check with the software you intend to use to see if they have issues running on a 64bit system even if they are in 32 bit mode.

HP's live assistance should help you should you choose to go 32 bit.

I wouldn't count out Windows 7 just yet, I use XP and love it, but am hearing allot of good things about W7 like "this is what Vista should have been"

If I ever had a Windows XP install disk, it's gone now! I have no idea where it would be. If I can't get a "downgrade" to XP on my new pc, I'll just buy an XP install disk somewhere.

But..um..I'm not real sure how to do that. My new pc will most likely have Vista & lots of free software & stuff already loaded. If I load XP, will it erase everything?

I have no idea about the 64/32 bit dealios. I guess I assumed 64bit would be best. But I supposed 32bit is more "accepted"?

You can copy an install disk from someone, the install disk and your product license key are separate so any disk will work with a valid key.

Yes installing XP over Vista will wipe out the vista and installed software but only you can decide if any of these freebies are things you can't live without.

32bit VS 64 bit;

Think of a bit in this context as a lane on the freeway, a 32 bit system has 32 lanes for traffic, a 64bit has 64 lanes so can handle mich more traffic at the same time, but here is the catch, unless the operating system and software are coded for 32 bit freeways than the additional 32 (64 bit system) are closed to traffic.

CCup software work on Vista 64bit systems but only in 32bit "compatability" mode (notice that word compatability comes back to haunt us once again).

Check the software and games you plan to use to see if they are 32 or 64 bit and if 32 check their websites to see of there are problems running on 64 bit systems.

Why are they selling 64 bit systems then you ask?

There is a place for them, in the high end graphics and gaming, multi-media world 64 is popular, sometimes manufacturers make more 64 bit chips that they cal sell and well then you have a "sale" and they make it in to computers purchased by ordanary people.

Again all of the above is just my own opinion, so take it with a grain of salt.

Ya but the CPU is also 64 bit so you are paying for a 64 lane freeway but only able to use 32 lanes.

HP defiantly will have a 32bit system that meets your needs.
