index file not working ??

Bear with me please, still new at all this.

I'm updating some of the text on my website with CoffeeCup's HTML Editor. I open the site in the editor, toggle the word wrap so I can see everything at once, change the text I want, save it in the Working folder as "index", preview it and it looks good, upload file to server as "public.html" but then the updated text doesn't show on the website.

I'm positive this is the exact steps I used to update text last week and it worked perfectly. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, or what step I'm missing.

Any advice ?

Try saving as "index.html".

Okay, tried saving it as "index.html" ... still no change on the live site. I'm pulling my hair out here, everything looks like it should work.

Saxon,

Use an FTP program to view the files in your root directory (folder). Check the date & time or your index.html file. Does it have the correct date and time?

Many times, I have uploaded a page to the wrong folder, and wondered why the change did not occur.

Another idea would be to clear you cache so your browser will get the new code from the server.

Try removing the file from the server and doing a complete re-upload. I'm having issues with saving and uploading from VSD and that's the only workaround I have found. I'm having to use the GoDaddy ftp client.

Good Luck!

hI,
What I find sometimes works as well is opening VSD and the website folder in "My Documents" and delete all in that folder, then I minimize the website folder and maximize VSD and click On save. now you have a fresh folder.
but I only have about 12 pages haven't tested above that.

That is an excellent idea. Thank you!

Is there a way to sync the remote files with the local files outside of vsd (which isn't working for me right now)?

Hi,
Actually you could log on to your server and using an ftp client like direct ftp-free ftp-filezilla, and remove the old "files folder" then just upload the files folder since you cleaned it out using the method above- or totally remove your website files and the files folder and resync in VSD. If you haven't changed anything by moving any images or folders when you made your websitem you could completely remove/delete everything and just do a resync.
sorry I missed a step.

VSD won't upload or re-sync right now. Waiting for a fix, hopefully soon? Now I remove all files from the remote server using the GoDaddy ftp client and upload the files from my computer. Not to whine (much), but the saving issues and the refusal to upload do make for a tedious process. When I save the changes/updates that I make in vsd, it creates a complete new folder within the existing folder and, of course, loses the path to photos, etc. I have to move and replace each time I save or I have a real mess. I am coping... It's a learning experience.

Well sounds to me there is a problem with the way your saving it then westwind, for example if I open VSD to make a website, I'm going to save it with a name of that website (MyWebsite.com)
Now I add all my images and any flash, along with text then I save it again with the same name, now I have a folder in My Documnets called MyWebsite_website.
Now let's say I decided to remove an image or 2 from a couple pages, after doing that I click on the save button (below the floppy diskette).
I don't use the method of "save as" or this will do just as you explained.

Now I don't know if this is how your doing it, but it does seem odd that it would continue to make a folder after every save.
There should lso be no problem with you uploading VSD into your godaddy account.-we can help you with that as well f you have the time. :D
in VSD go to setting>ftp settings.

ftp server=healthysafeandgreen.com or ftp.healthysafeandgreen.com
username=********
password=*******
WWW=leave blank or try /
Just my opinion.
