Hi all

Question for you designers out there. What image types do you find that you use on your Website more then others? Do you use PNG, JPG, GIF etc..?

Hi Scott.
I use an entire mixture of png, gif and jpg/jpeg images.
All my camera photos are jpg,
logos are usually .png because of the ease of transparency and file size
and then gif's if I need them animated, or they are pre-made like what comes with the html editor.

I find it important to have all of these available in any editing program. One image editing program I used dropped support for gif's, and I dropped my support for that program. (yikes, that reads worse than I intended, but it is a fact, nothing more)

Joining the bandwagon here.

I use a log of jpegs since the camera produces jpg files.

I tend to use PNG files for everything else, and have recently begun to convert anything other than a photo to a .xcf file (GIMP), and then when I finish any changes needed, I save as PNG, except for a program I use a work that behaves strangely with PNG.

I also have some BMP photos. I really need to teach my niece how to use jpegs.

I agree with Cliff although I convert more images to png than any other format. I use many different programs to manipulate images which one depends on the manipulation needed.

I have been using CC Converter by first making duplicate copies of all images so that it doesn't ruin original images. It seems to do a good job optimizing for web same as PhotoShop.
Everyone has an opinion & this is just mine sorry if it offends anyone.

jpeg for photographic quality
PNG for where I need many colours & transparency
GIF for images with less than 16 colours & transparency

I'm afraid I use GIF more than most, but that is due to a specific application I create images for. I have just begun to use PNG and am converting a lot of images to PNG. I still sometimes use GIF for web images.

About the same as Mike. The file size issue with images isn't perhaps so important as it was a few years back on dial-up. I used to aim at 50-60K a page then but 200K today isn't such a big deal on broadband.

I was surprised to see prevalence of PNG here, since using Photo Gallery, when I Preview it sez sorry no PNG we're converting to JPG. Are there any advantages in putting images into Gallery as PNG and letting Gallery convert them to JPG, or putting them in as JPG? Or maybe GIF? My images are diagrams containing text labels.

To avoid the conversion, use jpg for regular photo type images, and use gif for you diagrams, so they stay sharp.
