Creating a New Web Page

If you want to create a your own web page, this is the place to start. There are three basic ways to create a new page: Starting a Blank Page, Using the Quickstart Wizard, or Loading a Template.

1.) Starting a blank page: This is the easiest and fastest way to create a new page.

All you need to do is go to File->New Blank Page on the main menu.

Once you load the page, you may be wondering... what does it all mean?

Everything in brackets <> is a tag. You will notice different tags on your new page:

<html> and </html> This just tells the browser that the information contained is a web page.

<head> and </head> This is the page header. Information put here will not appear on the page directly. You don't need to worry about it for now, except for the title:

<title> and </title> Put your page title here. When someone views your page in their browser, whatever you put in your title will appear at the very top of their browser.

<body> and </body> This is where everything important happens. Everything you put here will appear on the page itself. So if you write "Hello world!" here, "Hello World!" will display on your page.

2.) Using the Quick Start Wizard: This gives you a little more control over the appearance of the page than starting a blank page. You can change things such as background color, link colors, scroll bar appearance, etc.

To start the Quickstart wizard, go to File->Quickstart Wizard, or just click on the Quickstart Wizard button on the right.

This will open the Quickstart Wizard. Here are the details:

On the "Basic" Tab:

Page Title- Put your page title here. When someone views your page in their browser, whatever you put in your title will appear at the very of their browser.

Background image- If you want to set your background to a picture, enter the filename for the picture here. You can browse your computer and select a graphic if you'd like.

Background- Here you can set your background to a specific color.

Text- Here you can change the color of text on your page.

Link- Link text is set to be a different color to differentiate it from regular text. You can set the text link color here.

Visited Link- After a user has already visited a link on your page, the text link will change color. The color the link will change to is set here.

Don't Underline Links Box- By default, all links are underlined. If you don't want them to be underlined, check this box.

Color Schemes- Here you can set color schemes to be used by your page. This will automatically load settings for background color, text, links, and visited links. You can also save your own color schemes.

On the "Advanced" Tab:

Meta Options for Search Engines- If you plan on advertising your page to search engines, enter page description and search keywords here.

Automatically Redirect Page- Use this if you want the page to redirect a user to a different page after a set amount of time. This is useful if you are creating a page to let viewers know you have changed web site locations.

On the Custom Scrollbars Tab:

Here you can change the appearance of the scrollbar that appears on the right side of the screen.

3.) Loading a Template: Using this method of creating a new page will load a pre-made web page. All you really need to do is fill in the blanks. There are many templates to choose from, and you can even create your own templates. While this method may look attractive, it may be difficult for a beginner to understand the HTML code loaded by a template. If you are having trouble understanding the code, it may be better to work from scratch until you understand enough about HTML to use a template.

To load a new template go to File->New From Template on the Main Menu.

There are many templates to choose from, ranging from beginner to advanced.

You will notice many of the same HTML tags you saw in the previous examples, but with a template, there is a lot more content already filled in for you. All you need to do is edit the content of the template to customize it for your own needs.
