Don’t put a counter on your page so that it is visible to your users. This can make your page look unprofessional. Take a look at some of the sites that you have recently visited; how many of those sites actually do this? You’ll see that very few do. Users that visit your site don’t really care about the traffic you are getting to your site and this is information that your competition doesn’t need to know! Instead, use the reporting system used by your server, since it should be able to provide you with all the information you need.
