What is causing this font issue on the CC website?

Hi everyone,

A few years ago I purchased CC software and put a site together. All went smoothly and I really enjoyed working with the software. Fast forward to a couple of days ago. I have need to put a new site together, so I went to the CC website to download the latest software releases and to check out Web Font as I'd like to use the font I've used in all of my business graphics. Ironically, I'm seeing weird font stuff happening on the CC website while viewing in Firefox. When trying to type my log-in info it reads in some sort of symbols. When I go to download the Web Font demo (or any demo) I get a similar situation. Some font is garbled, and some is missing entirely. I've attached two screenshots to show the difference between Firefox (3.5.4) and IE 8.

I also viewed the page in Safari and Google Chrome. While there were very subtle font rendering differences between all of them, and the smaller text sizes were clearest to read in IE, Firefox was the only one that had an outright error. All of this is on a WinXP Pro machine. Haven't tried it on a Mac.

So my question is what is causing what I am seeing? I do lots of web browsing in Firefox and can't remember every seeing this on another site. Needless to say, it isn't very confidence inspiring when it happens to be on the webpage of the company selling me the software to make my fonts read correctly!

Thanks,
Bob

I just took a look using the current release of FF and the text was fine (Win7 64bit). Perhaps it's a browser setting? CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

I also just looked at the page in an older version of Firefox (3.0.10) on another machine and it was fine there. It may just be a browser setting, but all of my settings should be default ones.

If there is an error in the font conversion shouln't it display as a safe default font?

I was just a little concerned that it was happening on the site where I'm about to purchase the software that is specifically for this purpose. I like the CC software in general, so I launched IE when it wouldn't display correctly in Firefox. But not everyone would do that. I'm putting together a business site that will (hopefully) be generating sales and it is obviously more important that the information be clear than having it displayed in my pretty font.

Actually, I take it back. While nothing is missing, when I looked at it in 3.0.10 the entire page appears to display in Arial, which is what should happen if there is any difficulty in the graphics conversion, correct?

Yeah, it's 100% probable that both machines need flash updates. I guess I was just surprised that it didn't revert back to arial, and instead gave me the symbols.

Hiya Bob,

Not sure if this is the same issue I just recently had, but have you by any chance recently installed any other new software other than these upgrades? The reason I ask is because a few days ago I installed High Impact Email 5 on my computer (program for designing newsletters and other types of pages and documents). When I did this, it totally messed up my fonts on CC's website. I put in a ticket but before I could get an answer I already figured out it was this program. Once I uninstalled it, the issue went away.

I've got a ticket in at TemplateZone (the developers of High Impact 5) to let them know about the issue, but this could be something happening to you too. Think about what you may have installed, try uninstalling all the things you've installed since this started, including the updated CC programs and see if it goes away. Check after each uninstall so you can see which one it might possibly be (if it's any at all of course).

Good luck on it :) Jo Ann

Hi JoAnn,

Thanks for the suggestion. Interesting to hear your experiences. I'm a bit of a software junkie, so I'm installing things all the time. And I haven't been on the CC website in a long time, perhaps not even during the past 18 months that I've owned this machine. So if it is a software conflict it could be caused by nearly any of the software that is on it.

My concern is that if I can see it this way, whatever the reason, will I be creating content in Website Font that a certain percentage of viewers is having difficulty with?

Hiya Bob,

the best way to make sure if a program is outputting the same thing you're seeing, or that your viewers are seeing it correctly as it should be would be to put something up on a site for us, then take a screenshot of how you see it and post it here. We could at least tell you if we see it the same way or if it looks ok like it should and we can give you a screenshot back of how we see it too :) Jo Ann
