How get rid of white background on...

As you have Paint ShopPro, open the image, save it in GIF format (assuming it isn't already), and in the Options choose: "Run Optimiser" - then "Wizard", or follow the simple transparency options - this is all self-explanatory. Similar routines for other packages such as GIMP.

Thanks Dave!

But when you say, ".... this is self-explanatory", I guess that depends who you are... lol. I've used Paint Shop Pro for quite a few years but today when I tried to find 'Optimiser' or even an 'Options' choice when I had the file open, there isn't anything. Also, the images are all 'one layer', so I have a feeling that means I can not separate them? I've never liked how Paint Shop Pro does that = soon as I save a photo/object/whatever in there, it slaps a white background on it. It becomes part of it, and even when I do a freehand cut around it and save it as a new image, no matter what I do it slaps the white background on. With most photos, that's ok, and for some reason it doesn't show. But if the object is anything other than a normal photo, the white is there.

I'm in the process of trying 'GIMP' also, but there again, if I move those same images into it, they are still one layer. I CAN cut around SOME simple objects and paste them as new, IF I use GIMP but of course there are so many objects that have the kind of detail that makes that virtually impossible.

(I hesitate going into this more on this forum because it really doesn't have anything to do with CoffeeCup software and I don't want them unhappy with me!)

Thanks!

Hi Pixi..

Of course, I don't know what version of PSP you have! Mine is V9, although I recall being able to create transparencies with V4.

One layer is perfect.

Open the file> save as> select gif > next box should at least have an "options" where you can choose transparency.

Send me a copy of the image to the email below and I'll do it for you, with a step-by-step commentary when done, so that you can do the same.

If needs be, I'll install Version 4 to prove the point.

Pixi,

This message is in the Website Design and Development section, and this is about de3veloping your website. There is no problem with sharing knowledge about graphics.

Dave,

GREAT link re the PSP 'background' problem!! Printed it out and got to work = A couple of the items/options are in slightly different places in my program (v.6.02 I think it says...) but I found every one of them. The part where I'm using the 'eyedropper' is a bit confusing, but I just made sure the color I wanted to be transparent, was the background color.... and I'm correct, the background color is the little square that is slightly 'behind' the other one in the palette? AND... the color I'm 'sucking up', by clicking on, is the color that is ON the image, correct?... (I'm not actually clicking on the color that shows in one of the little palette windows?)

I tried everything, I bet about a dozen times. Double checked everything... when I would bring the image onto the page I was creating for my web, (in VSD), the background is still white directly behind the image.... like a postage stamp. I want just the image on the web page so the web page color itself shows 'behind' the image, with no white background. I tried several little simple clip arts.

Unfortunately, it made no difference what-so-ever. If the truth were known, (and it will be soon as I type this!...) I'm pretty much in tears by now.

I only have 5 days left of the trial, for VSD. There are a couple other issues I still haven't resolved with it. (this background color thing is not really an issue with VSD). If I can't figure those out by that time, I won't be able to after that, then I'll really hesitate purchasing VSD.

One of the big ones is:
I have put several 'thumbnail size' photos on a page. What I want to be able to do, and I thought this would be a very basic operation of a web-building software, is when someone clicks on the thumbnail size, it would open the normal size photo. (through a link/hyperlink). Now, I don't want to have to put each normal photo on a page of it's own (hidden, till they click the small one).

There has to be a way, but when I'm in the LINK box, and link it to a doc., when I've done the 'preview', it says it "...can not open file. Protocall not associated with any program". I tried linking them to the actual photos that happen to be in PSP and a couple other ways that didn't work ... can't recall what they were at the moment... getting tired...lol. ;)

Heeellllp!!!

Pixi.

Re your image problem.
If I understand you correctly, there are a few options.

Have a look at this page I just made for you in a few seconds.
Is this what you want?
You only need one image to display the larger version.

http://www.powner.name/pail/pail.html

If so, go to the menu > View > Source (in IE), and you will see the basic code to achieve this.
In this instance, the html & image reside in the same folder (pail)
Ignore the fact that the page code is incomplete - I'm just showing how to use the code.

Dave,

Regarding the thumbnail & larger image: Yes! That's what I'm looking for. Except supposedly with VSD a person didn't need to mess with html. That's why I chose to do the trial. I have NO idea at all, how to achieve what I saw in the 'source' window. (Firefox) Is there a way to do that, in the VSD, without actually adding all the code stuff myself?
