I have this brand new Logitech quickcam pro 9000 (usb) webcam sitting here and
haven't used it yet.

In fact, never messed with them at all.

So -- before I install it, I'd like to hear about the dos and don'ts and my options.

** Can I just install it with XP? Are there XP drivers that are "good enough" ?
I just want the thing to send video and audio and that's pretty much it -- a lot of these software packages (logitech) are overkill. ?

** I have the CC webcam software. Should I use it? Why? If I go this route, should I just let XP install the camera and then install the CC software?

I'd like to use the camera for away from home security purposes and also a popular
messaging application. (Yahoo messenger?)

Thanks.

Mike it's always best to install any software with it's cd. So for your webcam use the logitech CD for the drivers as XP does not always install the correct ones. If you do not have the cd go here to get them.http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/support_downloads/&cl=us,en

The webcam will work great with yahoo messenger, as I use mine for video chatting and for webcam software by CC just do a search and read but the best way is to test it out for yourself. "It's A Smart Person That Asks"

I don't see the point of the CC software if logitech gives me the driver I need and
some other apps like the security thing etc.

Is Yahoo messenger thee most popular chat application still?

Thanks.

The Webcam software is useful for creating an online webcam, not for chatting with someone. I think it is a great tool, and I have used it, but I don't have a specific need for it ATM. "Time heals everything. Know who said that? My Latin teacher at barber college!"

Mike you need the drivers for anything you use with the webcam to be seen in that program, Webcam software will only detect it if the drivers are installed, windows may install some drivers but not ones for seeing in yahoo, msn, none will detect it. give it a go see what you get, been awhile sense I just installed it thru XP lol "It's A Smart Person That Asks"
