What I would like to do is this. I want to have a webcam OUTDOORS in my yard that will stream to my website. And I am starting from scratch with this effort. So rather than buy a bunch of stuff (cameras etc) and then figure out it doesn't work.. I figured I would as the forum first. Okay.. here is my basic plan.

I need the camera to be about 100 feet from my computer and outdoors so I was planning on buying an outdoor wireless camera. I was leaning toward one like this: http://www.jr.com/swann-communications/ … abSimilar. The specs seem to indicate that this camera can be attached to a PC

If I get this camera.. will this work? Do I need a different kind? Any other equipment? Any other concerns? Interested to hear your thoughts on all this. Thanks. www.swampyacresfarm.com

Hiya from Minnesota, Stephen,
Don't have any info for you about your project, but wanted to tell you your website is pretty well done and fun. You've done a great job with the CC software you used! I used the "Colorbox" method of displaying the CC slideshows on our website (www.pawpads.org) and it added some real panache to it. We have four cams that we want to put online for our volunteers to be able to access and are thinking of using the CC webcam software to do so...I'll let you know if it works out. By the way, I posted basically this same post on your guestbook and got "banned" as a spammer! Randy Patrick

The key is to make sure that the camera either comes with software for your computer, or that you have software on your computer to run it. The CC webcam software runs of your internal PC setup. So it does not matter what cam you have hooked up to your computer as long as your computer can recognize it as a camera. If you run windows, most of the time it should work. I use a digital video camera for my webcam and it works fine (but only because my camera is compatible with my computer).

I hope this made sense. The philosopher has not done philosophy until he has acted upon the mere conviction of his idea; for proof of the theory is in the act, not the idea.

I downloaded the trial version to experiment with using my video camera as a webcam but couldn't get it to work. CC WebCam didn't recognize the video camera, either. I'm able to attach my video camera to the PC via USB but the PC sees an external hard drive, not a video camera. I'm curious about how to get this working. Suggestions?

I believe in order for your computer to recognize you camera you have to attach it via firewire, not usb. The philosopher has not done philosophy until he has acted upon the mere conviction of his idea; for proof of the theory is in the act, not the idea.

I played around with this app for a minute. I believe the Logitech webcam was USB. CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

I know this is an old thread.. still looking for a solution?

A few things to consider:
- How are you providing power to the unit?
- What do you want to do with it? View remotely? On the road? Security cam(Motion sense) etc.
- Panasonic, Apex and Trendnet all make good wireless cameras. Most will need some sort of 3rd party housing to make them weather ready.
- Software if the next big thing and that depends on your use. Do you want to view streams remote? Just on one PC as a security system? There are a number of apps now that can be used with the iPhone (iCam is one) and it can present the videos from a number of cams.
- Webcamxp is another app but is not cheap... Most cameras will come with some software which might do the trick for you. I've had a lot of luck with the Panasonic BL-C30 wireless or one of their other products.

Swampy, I've used CC webcam software for years and think I can help you with a solution. Except for live streaming which I am still trying to figure out myself.

First you need the ability to capture the video to your computer.
I use a USB capture device sold by X10.com or a video capture card can be used.

I have used many different types of camera's over the years without a problem. The wire lead from the camera has to be changed to RCA type for the adapter.
Even wireless has a wire lead to a monitor. Just connect this to the USB or card instead of your monitor. You can also split the signal, but beware of signal loss. I've used X10 systems, VCR, and Digital Camcorders, various still camera's using the A/V, wired and wireless.

For multi camera's I use a automatic 8 camera's switcher. Each camera is plugged into the switcher and the video out goes to the USB or capture card. Set the switcher to rotate camera's as you like.

Manual A/V switchers are also found at places like Radio Shack.

Set the FTP upload to work with the switcher setting if one is used.

One thing to keep in mind is who is viewing your page?
I still have people who are on dial-up and can not view a fast refresh. All the get is a little red x.

Both cams on this page are FTPed. One is a security box camera the other a digital camcorder. Both are looking through windows. One is using version 4.1 the other 3 CC cam software. The one from Ohio is on dial-up.

Hope this helps a little, Swampy
