What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?

It sounds silly I guess, but when I started, I just wanted to be a web designer/developer. Now, like many of you, I have my own pet projects that are promising, and a couple of them make some decent money, but nothing huge yet. I am looking for that "big thing", but I am not for sure what it will be. Hmmmmmmm. Maybe I just watch Shark Tank too much. Can anyone else relate?

Yea I hear you Rod. Not so sure it will ever happen for me. Between my full time job with the government and my web design business I have no time for any thing else. I'm pretty sure the only big thing that will happen for me is becoming a grandpa at the age of 41 this January!

Ha I know don't say it... lol.

Web design for me is mostly a matter of a small need for a website. I only have one site that is capable of generating income but it's not done being tested. I built it for myself to use at work but then saw the possibility to sell subscriptions to other greenhouses. I also help run a small campground and mobile home park which I need to convert it's site to responsive. I have my second and third full time jobs as a parent to take up the rest of my time. Not a grandpa yet and hope that will be during my golden years. The next big thing is a matter of what you consider big. For me if I would make enough to pay for software and hardware upgrades I would say it's a big thing.
I can't hear what I'm looking at.
It's easy to overlook something you're not looking for.

Well, that seems to be a nice achievement! Keep us posted on that one, Steve! :)

When I started making websites, it was just to enable our headmaster to brag about having the first school website for miles and miles. I didn't see myself as someone who would be doing much of this, but then I ran into this wee company named CC (for short), and I was hooked. I made myself and some friends all sorts of websites just for fun, and the odd job making sites for someone else for money came knocking at my door. I will never become rich, but this little work-hobby actually enables me to pay for most of my hardware and software.

Thanks for sharing. Having that inner peace to know you're happy where you are at is great, and boy, do I understand the whole hardware/software upgrading thing. I just find myself extremely hungry to go for more.

@steve, future congratulations sir on becoming a grandfather! Now that's something to look forward to. :)

@inger, I can relate to finding CC. I don't know where I would be at if it wasn't for the software/forums.

Started doing web stuff on a part time basis many years ago. Now I only do it to support an orphanage in Uganda, pay for the hosting etc. Did have plans once to dominate the world but to be honest I like my day job too much which is application development in adhesives and tapes.

I did want to be a milkman when I was young, driving round on the electric milk floats. Thankfully my mum talked me out of it! :)

Hey Rod. I understand completely.

I have decided ( and this is just me ) that I don't want fame or fortune.
I've raised my children and what 'they' do with the world will be up to them.
For myself...I'll watch the sun come up, and go back down. Till my time is up.
I'll sit on the bank of the river and fish, feed my dog ( Dixie - a 6 yr old Sheltie ), and relax.
Occasionally I'll get on-line and interact with the community and give my 2 cents while I listen to what others have to offer.
To support my relaxed lifestyle I drive an 18 wheeler. I get to see what the world was and what it is becoming. Both good and bad. I watch the frantic traffic, people rushing to and fro, and all I want to do is go back to my riverbank.
I was active when I was young. I served in the US military and traveled the world.
But now I have become a pacifist. But I am still a pacifist with teeth! Don't kick a sleeping dog!!
I collect guns. I own my land. I enjoy my life.
That said, when it is raining, I do enjoy life on the computer. I design web sites, logos, videos and more for those that want them. My personal site doesn't have much on it and I don't really advertise as I have more than enough to keep me busy. For now. But no one knows what the future will hold. I might maintain my lifestyle, or I might change it completely. You just never know.
But, as my body gets older I try and keep my mind young.
I enjoy life and I enjoy my children. Watching them I've decide to stay young forever. I never wanna grow up!
