Thinking about Linux

A techy friend and I were talking the other night, and he talked about Ubuntu Linux being very user friendly and having a Windows emulator that would run most pre-Win8 software.

Has anyone tested CC software for running on Linux with an emulator?

(I'm going to be setting up a Linux computer in my office to take care of backups, but if it will run CC software, then I might add one for development.)

There is WINE but I have never had any luck with it. If you are going to switch to a different OS, go Mac before Linux. There just is so much more out there.

As far as the "new" computer, I'm repurposing a very old computer that should run Linux fine. It's only task will be running backups, so there's no need to spend any money on it when Linux will do.

I honestly would go Mac if I had the money and could make sure it would work compatibly with my Windows machines. Every Mac person I know loves it, and I already know of their reliability.

So you've had no luck running CC apps on WINE?

I have tried WINE on OS X and never had any luck, so I would think the same issues would apply to Linux. Many people do use it so I am not sure why it never has worked for me. ;)

Since I'm setting up the Linux box to take care of backups, I plan on trying CC software on there. If it runs successfully, then there's another selling point for you! :) "Linux-compatible"

Post back here if you do get it to work. I am sure others would love to use Linux if they could. ;)

Tried getting a few apps to run a number of years ago. To be honest more trouble than it was worth.

Did it with some forks of Wine, Cedega which doesn't exist in linux format anymore and Codeweavers Crossover.

Got the HTML Editor running except that the menu images didn't show, and the wysiwyg didn't work.

From what I was told, the new version of Ubuntu is a lot friendlier now. However, when it comes to computers, nothing is ever as friendly as it sounds.

I have it running on my wife's Alien MX11 laptop (donated by my eldest), runs perfectly. Unity desktop can take a bit of getting used to. Linux Mint with the Cinammon desktop might be a bit more palatable for anyone used to Windows 7.

I run Linux at times on some of my systems. I use VMWARE to run Windows within Linux. The only issue is if you run software that is not from a trusted source, you can still have problems in your VM box. Otherwise, you have the best of both worlds, and it will run all software. I tried wine several years ago with software (including CC), and got some very weird results. Ubuntu is the best version that I have used for an easy install (SUSE was pretty good too). If you just want to try it out, there is the WUBI Ubuntu installer that will install Linux (duel boot) as a windows program so you can remove it later.
