For me the coffee epiphany came with a french press, fresh ground beans from whole beans I store in foil. You are very correct about the temperature, I fully boil in a kettle and let rest for a few minutes to cool to 200 degrees or so. Volunteering to help

Be careful dude. Look up french press and cholesterol. I used to use one, but it seems that the paper filter in a drip brewer removes some stuff that can raise your ldl bad cholesterol, so I quit that.

But a cholesterol check may be in order for people who use a French press or percolator to make their coffee or who prefer espresso or other varieties of unfiltered coffee, according to Dr. Michael J. Klag, the vice dean for clinical investigation at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore.

In 2001, Klag and his colleagues reviewed more than a dozen studies that looked at the relationship between coffee consumption and cholesterol levels. They found that drinking an average of six cups of coffee a day was associated with increased total cholesterol and LDL, the harmful type of cholesterol. Nearly all of the rise in cholesterol was linked to unfiltered coffee.


That being said, check out toddy, especially for those of you who may have stomach problems with harsher coffees. Seems the South Americans used to crush coffee beans and let them sit and soak in rain water for a few days, then drink it. ( nowdays, run it through a filter on the way, after soaking ) I tried it in the old french press and it makes an extremely smooth cup! Good use for the french press, if you'd rather not get the cholesterol problems from hot brewing in it.
