So sad... Part 2 - Post ID 238849

Apple had their live event today. I went to the web site expecting to be able to view the stream. Turns out, in light gray text on a white background that was so small as to barely be readable was the information: only available on Safari 5.1.10. No problem. I'll watch it on my iPad.

So I pulled it up on my iPad. Terrible streaming. Stop. Start. Stop. Start. And the strangest thing... you could hear a Chinese translator speaking Chinese in the feed.

In the meantime, on the off-chance that Verizon (on iPad) was just running slow, I went to Apple's web site and downloaded Safari for Windows. Turns out they only have version 5.1.7 so it still wouldn't work to view the stream on my Windows computer. I opened up Quicktime. Not there. At one point on my iPad, I got a picture of the colored bars that you used to see when the TV stations stopped playing (remember those days?). Then, things seemed to clear up and the streaming was happening! It was to be short-lived however. Suddenly, the stream cut to a picture of the mostly empty auditorium with people leaving and it was over with me having viewed very little of it.

Bottom line: It was not possible for anyone not using an Apple device to view the event.

You would think that Apple would have wanted their stream viewable by anyone, especially those on non-Apple products. You'd think they would want to be ubiquitous in their approach and include everyone. Sadly, they required everyone conform to a standard that wasn't possible for a very large portion of the world -- those not using Apple. (Only 5% of the world use Safari -- http://www.netmarketshare.com/)

I'm still going to hopefully find a recorded version and watch it (perhaps on YouTube). However, Apple once again proved its it simply won't play well with others. If they did, they might capture more than 6% of the market. It's really a shame since they have such good products. So sad...

Apple is known for never allowing real-time streaming on a non-Apple device but I had the same problems using Safari. They totally fumbled this year during this event.

In a few hours they will have it listed as a podcast that you can download through iTunes or you can get it through Apple TV. I have to wait as well. Someone better get fired over that mess. ;)

I got to watch the video last night. I must say, Apple has outdone themselves with this one.

I goggled this question and received this info for an answer;
"What percent of the market are apple mobile devices?"
It said that Apple mobile devices are 42.4 percent of the mobile market. So I guess that that is a large enough piece of the pie for me to worry about marketing to them.

When you Google'd it did you put in your local area... Maybe state or province or at least continent you live? It really differs from country to country.
