Dear CoffeeCup,

Thank you for the e-mail describing how update of Flash Player broke existing photo galleries:

http://www.coffeecup.com/newsletter/183 … 1cd96e7298

I panicked a little when I noticed that the old CoffeeCup photo gallery I had installed on a production Web site no longer worked with Internet Explorer (version 8). Curiously, it worked well with Firefox (version 3.0.13). All is fine now.

Regarding the recommendation given in your e-mail, I understand your wanting to keep explanations simple, but I wish you could let folks know that all they must do in order to repair an existing photo gallery is to use the new Photo Gallery software to create a trivial gallery, then substitute the .swf from the trivial gallery for the one in the existing gallery on the hosting server. This could save users a lot of time and fuss. No way did I want to marshal my original photos all over again, even with Photo Gallery doing the heavy lifting of resizing, creating thumbnails, building an .xml control file etc.

Again, thanks for jumping on this problem quickly.

What you are attempting to do there is something outside of the software. While this can work very well for some users, others will find that even more confusing. We try to keep our instructions as simple as possible so there is no possible room for error.

Advanced users always seem to know the tips and tricks ;)

What does this mean (create a trivial gallery)???

I believe he's talking about making a gallery with one (or a few) pictures, that aren't going to end up on your site. The idea would be to just get Photo Gallery to produce the updated .swf file.

If I am wrong on this interpretation, I do apologise and am sure someone here will give correct guidance. :) Who needs sleep?

hey your basically right Phil, but another way is to open the pre-existing project in Photo Gallery and just re-save it without changing the name, then uploading the swf should work as well, but sometimes it's just best to upload the xml, swf to be safe. :) "It's A Smart Person That Asks"

I have done the opening & resaving in the newer version of Photo Gallery (5.94), but still can't preview 5 out of 14 slideshows in VSD (error message: The program cannot display the web page. I was hoping this would be a fix (building a trivial gallery & switching out the .swf file), but if opening & resaving the slideshow accomplishes the same thing, then this is not working for me.

Thanks for the explanations!

I noticed that when I opened & resaved the slideshows in the new version of Photo Gallery, the .xml file has a new date & time modified, but the .swf file has the original date modified, so somehow it's not updating. Is this my problem (the reason VSD can't peview the slideshows)?

Hello
One of my production sites stopped working completely even when using this new version of photogallery on Ubuntu client machines, which of course I had to hear from a screaming customer. The same symptom was not present on Windows based machines, and I am not sure at this point if it's an issue on Macs but since I have a workaround I will not pursue it. The bottom line, is the .swf file is looking to load a file called "undefined", which shows as an error in both my server error and access files. I simply touched a file on the server with this name and voila all started working. You may want to investigate this a bit further on your end.

Hi Judy,
I think this boils down to tis, the files can't be overwrittenin VSD, so you'll have to completely remove the files/gallery files from VSD then re-add your gallery usinf the flash tool, asto why only 5 out of 14 is strange indeed, but I would remove the smallest of the 5 just for testing, but I have to say, when I uploaded after installing and removing the files on my server first, VSD updated the files automatically which was cool.( recognized the new version of Photo Gallery)

Also the when updating Photo Gallery , you'll also need to update the themes as they have been changed to fit the change in flash as well, this will also cause an error message.......

Bruzer,

I opened each slideshow in Photo Gallery (new version) & saved it. Then I went into VSD, removed the flash for each slideshow, and using the flash tool, reinserted the flash. I have also tried deleting the vsd temporary directory, and that didn't help. I've also deleted the .swf files, but the .swf files that replace them when I save the slideshows in the new Photo Gallery version have the same date (9/1), which is before I updated Flash Player & Photo Gallery.

Is there anything else I should do?

Thanks-
