I've seen several threads about using Lockbox on other computers or running it from a USB drive, and the advice usually goes something like this: 'Copy the pw.pwk file to the new location, and you're good-to-go.'
Maybe so, but I think it should be added that, if you have set up Lockbox to serve more than one login ID, you'll need to copy the .pwk files for those other users in order for them to access their passwords. So it will be necessary to copy all files with the .pwk extension in order for all users to be able to find their data.
As an example, my system, with two login IDs, has the following files:
pw.pwk
pw1.pwk
It appears that you can rename these files with something more meaningful, such as 'john.pwk' and 'mary.pwk' and Lockbox will still find them automagically. I've tested this superficially and it seems to work. Scott, can you confirm that Lockbox will function fully and properly if the files are renamed in this manner?
Also, it's important to note that using the "Copy Program to Folder or Drive" function only copies the currently logged-in user's database file to the new location. You must logout and then login to any additional user IDs and repeat the 'Copy Program' command to ensure that their database files are also copied. This is a bit redundant, as it will result in overwriting the other ancillary files, but it works.
Have something to add? We’d love to hear it!
