Thank you for your mail.

Unfortunately, the content of this mail is completely uninteresting to me.

The time of purchase your software it was lifetime upgrade.

All changes in this EULA after the sale no longer concern me.

This is both for American and European law.

They have offered a bundel with live time warranty upgrade, I have accepted the offering and paid.

For new customers, they feel free to change anything for existing customers like me with the given properties (purchase agreement), please keep them all one.

With this in mind, I expect the new versions course free of charge as a download.

Anything else would be irresponsible and a clear breach of contract.

BR Thomas

btw: Why do you delete my old Topic?

Your Mail:

Hey there!

In over 15 years of making amazing Web Design and other software products, CoffeeCup has in general, delivered improved versions of the software free of charge. We will continue to do so, especially when a new version mainly consists of minor improvements and fixes. However, from time to time there will be new versions that require rewrites of the application or parts of the application. This process requires significant research, design, development and testing time. In those situations and on a case by case basis, CoffeeCup reserves the right to require a fee for upgrading to the new and improved version of the software. Given the resources it would take, we would hate to withhold implementing these improvements purely based on financial decisions; charging a nominal fee for updates is the only way to accomplish this.

Our lifetime upgrade policy was actually changed quite some time ago and you will not find any references on our website that elude to any lifetime policy. On our website we do list our Upgrade Policy here at http://www.coffeecup.com/legal/eula#upgrade This is also in the EULA when you install the Editor. Yeah that legal stuff we all click YES on.

Even though we have had this policy in place, we have still been providing updates for free which I certainly can see why some may have the impression nothing has changed when the opposite is true. For years our customers have been telling us we are too generous on our free updates and that they would be willing to pay fees to make sure the program they love keeps getting plenty of attention. We held out for over 15 yearsthough and finally decided after much discussion that it was just time to do so. Yes, it is a big change for some and we know not everyone will be happy with that, but we need to do what we think is the best for us and our customers. We still plan on having many, many free updates as we feel that is very important but once and a while there will need to be a small fee to help offset these costs.

The good news is that any purchase made within 45 days will qualify you for a free update. If you don’t feel new functionality is worth the upgrade you can always stay with your current version.

As a registered user of the HTML Editor, we are offering this update for only $19 .

Thank you for emailing us and we are sure you will love the update. It is worth every penny....

What exactly are the differences to the new updated version HTML editor as opposed to the one I've got which is Ver12 something or other. When I go to see what's new, I cannot really see that much, is there a page where there is comparison. I do know what you mean Thomas I was a bit taken aback by this new idea, however I'm willing to reserve judgement.

Hello Scott & All.
I have been using the HTML paid editor since about 1999 and have been given many free upgrades over the years. I have certainly benefited from what I believed to be a life time warranty which Thomas mentions. While the idea of $19 is a modest sum the idea of charging for upgrades has not been well explained by the mighty CC. Perhaps a bit more explanation as to why you are doing it to your many customers instead of the bombardment of "special offers" each week would benefit both CC and your customers.

Regards

I have been getting the emails Scott but haven't being paying that much attention as http://www.coffeecup.com/forums/html-ed … _id=224342 exactly made my point. I just automatically thought that I would be getting the HTML editors updates free so was confident I would be getting any new version when released, but I've had to buy a new laptop and so have had to download software I use and found out that there was a version but I'm not allowed it unless I pay $19.
When you see any professional download companies or things like About.com they are all for CC HTML editor, but and it's a big but, they always say about the free upgrades for life, that is a massive thing among reviewers.

The HTML editor may have been rewritten, although I cannot see why, not the whole thing, but even if it has, we all know as designers the net has evolved to a totally different thing to what it was when I was coding for just IE and Netscape, however that's not our fault.

What we could have done was just discontinue the HTML Editor and released a new program and charged full price. However I think many would find that more objectionable then this method. ;)

We understand changes are not easy (on both sides) and we are doing our best to make right by our users as best as we can. So far response to this change has been overwhelmly positive. We are also going to try and improve the way we convey this message to everyone so it is a bit more clear.

You still have access to download version 12 though so if you do not feel the enhancements of version 14 are worth it to you, stick with the version you have now. Version 12 is still a great release. ;)

All things considered, I believe that they are trying to look after their customers. We all like free products and we all did well for quire a few years.

Most other companies are doing the same. Except the large ones who never gave anything away.

Yes you make some good points of course and yeah ver 12 is still a great version and the one I will stick with for now,

While I'm talking to you, did CC ever think of just doing media queries eg in their CSS codes within the HTML editor instead of making RLM?

Thanks G'Kar... ;)

Pulling off something that complex would be way too difficult within the HTML Editor without a major rewrite. This is why we are developing our whole new line of responsive based programs. Soon you will see more information on our new Responsive Site Designer which merges the features of the Editor and Visual Site Designer into one program.
