Thanks - I might do that. It's frustrating when the thing hangs and I have to kill the whole thing. Sooner or later I'm going to lose a lot of stuff I hadn't got round to saving by doing that. Thank you for your time, anyway: I can explain rather more succinctly now exactly what is going on.

Scatterbrain, I've got the same problem with the CSS validator.
The HTML validator works fine, but the CSS one freezes everything and I have to Ctrl-Alt-Delete the Editor to get out of it. At the time, no one else popped up to say they had that problem as well. When I downloaded the last updated version and tried it – same thing. I've been going directly to the W3C site and had forgotten about this "fluke".
If you get an answer from support, let us know. :)

Wow - it's not just me! I feel better already!
Seriously, though: I will certainly pass on anything interesting I find out.

I have the same issue :(

I don't think it's a connection problem.
My connection is 200 Megabit/sec download 10 Megabit/sec upload over fiber broadband

Most people don't even have such a fast connection.

It has been suggested that the problem arises from anti-virus or firewall software, which interferes in a way which is hard to predict or pin down. No cure has been offered, but here is an alternative way to validate our CSS files:

"What you can do as a work around is go to http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ and click the By File Upload Tab and validate your CSS file that way."

I hope it helps!

I use this site ( http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/) often.
The only problem is that I am lazy.
That's why I use the CoffeeCup software :P

Me too, but at least now I can be fairly lazy and have my CSS validated as well!

I just checked today and it worked pretty much as expected. Anti-virus software was mentioned above as maybe causing the problem. In that view that there may be a common use of the same software among people having the problem; I use AVG.
