I have the same problem. I've used Firestarter for a few years, but I noticed starting with version 7.0 my file sizes sky rocketed. In the past, if I used 6 or 7 12 -20 kb pictures, the total SWF file was maybe 100 kb. Now they're over 1.25 megs! Same photos & effects as before, but because it's too big it's nearly unusable. I tried the compression feature, but it didn't make any difference. I emailed support, but haven't heard back yet.

I will have to try that myself. The firestarter program will have a little overhead, and always be a bit bigger file than the 3 individual images would add up to.
You are saying that 63k is huge? I can only guess that you are on dial-up or less. If you Internet connection is horribly slow, most other flash websites must take a real long time to load.

If I get the chance, I will create a flash and see how it goes with a few regular images. Maybe ther is a bug somewhere.

I had a play with the newest firestarter. I added 4 images, 6k to 7k each. Made a "motion path" for one of them, and "target shooter" for another. Saved the file. Total size of the .swf file is 36k.

I have no problem with that. 26k for the images, and only another 10k for the flash effects and the swf file? I think Coffeecup Firestarter is working fine.

Do either of you have a sound file with your flash? Sound files can be large, and need to load the entire file to play. Keep trying and see what you can do. Keep in mind, I think .bmp image files might stay smaller than jpeg files. Try different file types and see if it makes a difference.

Okay here's the deal. I just made another applet using 3 pictures 7kb each (300x300)with fade in/out and "grow". No music or other effects. The finished .swf was 278kb. Seems too big. I tried using the compression feature, but didn't any effect on file size at all. Iv'e used FS for years. What am I doing wrong?

Randy,

I am confused. You say you have images at only 7kb, but they are 300x300???? Wow that is some awsome compression you got going on there. Usually a 7kb image is no more than a meduim sized icon, with limited colors. I am guessing there is something a little off about the program you have reporting that size of an image with such little file size. Just a guess.
Any chance you could maybe upload your flash web page, and also your individual images that you are using and give us a link? That way, we could have a look at exactly what you are using. It sounds more like your images might/should/would be 70kb, and that would make more sense.

Thank you for sending me the files. You are absolutely correct, the new firestarter is making the size of the flash much larger than it used to.

I used your images to re-produce your flash animation. My completed .swf file was 350kb even when I spead it up and shorten the length of the movie, and compress the jpg, which did nothing.
I then used an older version of firestarter to open the .fire file. Saved it with a new name, and now the exact same animation is 143kb. Less than half the file size, from the same .fire saved file.

I will do my best to present this to the powers that be, Maybe Scott will see this and find a cure.

Thank you for bringing this up. Please forward your problems with firestarter to coffeecup help desk and see if they have an answer for you.
