links not working

I am working on a menu for the first time with DHTML menu builder and have it how I want it except for a couple of problems---

1. I do not want a link on the Root item--- just mouseover with the drop down choices. Even though I didn't add a link url it is showing the little hand as if there was a link. How can I change this on the Root name?

2. When I preview my menu none of the links work ---'file not found'

I do not have my site uploaded yet but when I preview the other pages the links all work correctly --- just not in the drop down menu. I used URLs like this:

http://www.mysite.org/home
http://www.mysite.org/mission
http://www.mysite.org/help

What am I doing wrong?

Thanks!

Hiya Kare,

Could be you don't have full links there maybe? you're missing the page extensions of the pages in your links such as home.html or mission.html, or help.txt or whatever the end of the pages are for those particular links. Notice how those links don't work when clicked on in here either, so that's always a good way to test your links for menus to be sure they work at all outside the menu too. They should work once you put the rest of the name in. Let me know if that works :) Jo Ann

Thanks Joann! That did the trick and it is working.

Do you know how to solve my question #1. I looked at your site -- really lovely!! --- and you don't have a link with the top item of your drop down. It just goes to the mouse over.

Appreciate any help,
kare

Well without knowing how the code is setup for the DHTML menu it's hard for me to answer that question. What I do for it inside my program that I used, and also within a CSS menu is I just remove the entire href= line completely from the code so there is no link. The program I use has an option for that so I don't have to really mess with the code at all, but CSS menus I just remove that tag and there's no link then.

Check to see if the DHTML Menu builder has an option somewhere that you missed maybe? If not, let me know if it spits out code for the menu items that you can alter or not. If it doesn't then we'll have to look around for where it does send the menu code as it may be in one of the javascript files that it spits out too. I don't have it installed at the moment, but if we're unable to solve this quickly I'll get it installed and see what I can find on it. Jo Ann

If the link is referencing a file such as an HTML file, it must end with a file extension, as Jo Ann mentioned. Otherwise, the web server may interpret the malformed URL as a directory.

I don't use the Free DHTML Menu Builder so I can't offer advice as how to present the home page root item from displaying as a link but instead, only display the subcategories. Perhaps someone else who uses the application can offer a solution that works for you.

Good Luck! CoffeeCup... Yeah, they are the best!

JoAnn and Joker,
Surely appreciate you guys! I went back into the program and decided to make a new trial menu.

In the field where you insert the link it already has the characters "http://" in that field and then you can just fill in the rest of the URL.. It apparently thought since I had left the "http://" in the field that I wanted to have it link to something. So I just deleted those characters and it works just fine in my trial.

When I am at my main computer tomorrow I will correct my real menu and if I still have problems I will let you know but I think this should take care of my problems.

Thanks!
