Downloading pdf files

Is there a workaround for links to pdf files where the user has the option to either open the file or save the file instead of the various target selections for the Link Properties of a Document in VSD?

For example, when downloading a pdf file from the CC site a pop-up window is displayed where you can either open the file by selecting the program to be used via a drop-down list or you can save the file to a local drive.

This is precisely the question I have been searching the answer for. I am a real novice at website construction and I wish to be able to allow visitors to download PDF files. They may wish to have a look first. I think, note think, that I know how to get the download started.

The other query is what is a reasonable size for a downloadable PDF. I have one at 256megs (gulp), and obviously that needs to be broken up into a number of parts.

It's easy to attach a file to a webpage in Visual Site Designer. To do this, simply write some text (like "Click here to view my movie"), highlight it using the Arrow tool, then click the Link button on toolbar at the top of the program. In the Link window, click the Link to a Document button, then browse for the file you want presented when people click that link. Afterward, when you send your webpage to the Internet, the file you linked will also get uploaded to the correct location.

I can tell you that you will absolutely not want to do this with anything over 20MB with VSD. What you would do instead is just upload the PDF to any location on the web and link some text or image to that PDF URL.

Thank you for this reply.

I have done this, but I cannot seem to call up the pdf file in Preview. I get all sorts of odd responses.

But then the penny dropped. Perhaps the link cannot be checked in Preview, but you must Publish to the internet first.

Is this supposition correct.

If it is, I can happily proceed to wipe my old website off the net and upload the new version.

Hope you had a good Christmas. It was bloody hot here in Australia.
