I select the image, press Shift and try to reduce or enlarge the image by grabbing a boundary and pushing in or pulling out accordingly. Instead of changing size, it rotates! If I bring up the image properties box and make a bigger pixel number for width it stretches the image and does not maintain the aspect ratio. Wow, this is frustrating. Many thanks.

VSD doesn't have the corner grab with aspect ratio. You can either grab each side and set them manually or enter the wanted values in the properties box. The best thing to do is to resize your images with an editor before you use them in VSD.
