Why do I get disconnected after a certain period of time?
There is nothing in Direct FTP that will automatically disconnect you, but usually the host server will implement some type of auto-disconnect feature for security reasons. You should contact your hosting company to see if there is any way the time limit can be increased. Also try checking the Stay Connected checkbox you can set the program to keep the connection alive, as long as possible.
