I can't connect to my FTP server.

There can be several reasons why you can't connect to the FTP server:

**MOST IMPORTANT: CHECK THE PASSIVE CHECKBOX UNDER ADVANCED SETTINGS**

  1. In the FTP Server field, do not put ftp:// or http:// in front of the name.
  2. Make sure you are putting the correct Server name for your FTP server. Sometimes just putting your domain name will work, but sometimes your Webhosting provider is going to require you use a ftp. in front of your domain name, such as ftp.hostname.com. In some instances it may be a completely different address altogether.

For instance, if your website name is hostname.com, your Webhosting provider may have you ftp to something like ftp-server01.whatever.com.

The only way to know for sure is to ask your Webhosting provider.

  3. If you are using any sort of PC Protection software such as a Firewall, or Norton, try either disabling them or specifically allowing VisualSite Designer access to the Internet.
  4. For some FTP-servers it is necessary to check the passive flag. Open the Internet Connection dialog and click on the Advanced button. This will open a new dialog where you can check this Passive flag. Click on OK and try to upload the homepage again. If that doesn't work then open the dialog again and uncheck the Passive flag.
  5. If you still cannot connect to your FTP server, it may be that the built-in FTP program in VisualSite Designer is not compatible with your FTP server, you may need to use another FTP program to upload. You can use CoffeeCup Free FTP, downloadable from here.

VisualSite Designer will automatically export all the HTML files and images to the each time you save the VNU. There will be a folder using the exact same name as the VNU file, followed by "_website" (Ex: "Mysite_website"). With Direct FTP you can connect to your FTP server and upload the contents of that folder manually.
