Chapter 1: Website Design Software
You may have heard about Website design software that lets you create pages without knowing any HTML. With these programs you create a page in "WYSIWYG" (what you see is what you get) mode, adding and formatting text and images much like you do in a word processor. Behind the scenes the program creates the necessary HTML for you. Sounds like a pretty good idea, but is it?
Yes and no. While it's true these programs are save a lot of time, the problem is when someone who doesn't know much about HTML or Web design tries to use them..Just like you can't learn really English from using Microsoft Word, you can't learn HTML from a WYSIWYG program. So why is this important? Because without an understanding of HTML you will never be a decent Webmaster. Even if you eventually decide to use such a program, you will be able to do a lot more with it after you know the fundamentals of HTML and Web design. In addition, as sophisticated as these programs are, they can't do everything. Sometimes you need to go in and tweak the HTML manually, which requires knowledge of HTML on your part. My advice is to start by designing your Web pages manually; writing HTML code by hand with a "Code Editor". There are many good Code Editors out there (I wouldn't be a very good businessman if I didn't mention the CoffeeCup HTML Editor here: hint, hint…) and you can make the decision of which one is best for you. This book will provide all you need to know on how to start doing this, and before you know it, you'll find that you are developing the expertise needed to create really great Websites.
